The daytona siezed up at the weekend so it's getting a full strip down to see if I can salvage the engine and rebuild it, so whilst I'm at it I'm going to spruce the whole thing up and make it a bit different, I would have liked to make it a mint bike but it hasn't been too well looked after in the past so I'm just going to make it my own. Here's a pic of it currently and I'll post updates of how it's getting on as I go.
Stripped down as far as ready to pull the engine out of the frame. Made sure to mark every plug I pulled out so hopefully going back together won't be too bad.
I am looking forward to read about your progress in your project. I hope you will document it with photos too.
What you thinking with the build, custom or cleaned up stock with mods etc. Looks like a dam nice bike already tho
I'm going to wait and see what like the internals of the engine look like and if it's salvageable rebuild it, if not I think I'll try get a 1050 engine and swap over to that. Want to Powdercoat the frame too, something different like midnight purple or something and just clean it all up. Yeah it is a tidy enough bike but when you get up close you can tell there's been a butcher at it in the past
How so? Just more solid made? Is there any threads you know of with more info on this? Quite interested to have a read up about it I'm struggling to find replacement internals for the 955 so figured a newer engine would be better finding parts for?
I'm sure it would be easier to get 1050 bits tbh tho I wasn't aware it was hard getting 955 stuff. I am in a few different forums and have seen about the 955 being better many times, probably in triumphrat.com but you will need to search. Either way the 955 and 1050 are great bikes, as is my T509 885 Speedie.
OK thanks pal, I'll have a look and see what's what, hopefully it's a simple enough fix as swapping engine and wiring loom completely, sounds like a fair task
These things happen mate, put your own signature on it buddy and you will ride it knowing you did all the mods! Good luck! and keep us posted.
Got the engine out the daytona and started stripping it down. Nothing obvious so far, cylinder bores are fine and no visible damage in the head. Only thing I've found is something has been in cylinder one at some point in its life, the top of the piston has come in contact with something but everything else seems fine so I reckon it was the reason for the engine obviously having been stripped before
Well, found the definite culprit to my woes tonight.... Spotted some hairy bits on the centre big end (and not the good kind) after I took the sump off, must've gotten starved of oil somehow and has picked up on the bearing and shoved the white metal between the crank and big end to lock it up, the other 2 feel fine turning the engine over by hand now, will continue to strip just got excited when I spotted the bugger so had to whip it out (no inuendo intended)
I found a crankshaft with set of rods and shells online that look in good nick so think I'll go for a rebuild. Will get that and check all the clearances and if they are all good go for it and if not I'll see if I can source a new set of shells. Want to get the engine powdercoated or painted too so it's mint. If I rebuild it'll be a good bit of piece if mind knowing there shouldn't be any problems (hopefully) and it'll keep me busy through winter
Got the crankcase split tonight and removed the crank leaving the pistons in there respective cylinders. Still don't understand how or why the big end shat itself, there was no signs of oil starvation at the main bearing that feeds the offending big end and the oil passageway seems clear, the oil pick up strainer was choked with shite and the oil pump feels a bit rough but if it was the pump I'd of thought more than one big end would be gone as they would be hardest for the oil to get to. Getting closer to start cleaning bits up for rebuilding
