looking to fit bar end mirrors but need to remove the original threaded bar inserts got one out but the other wont move it is also further in looking for ideas to get it out with non destructive methods tried screwing in a bolt with lock nuts but no success there m 16 thread if anyone's interested
There was a thread a few months ago Davie, I think in the Bonnie section. A couple of ways to try: Jack out the insert using a large washer on the end of the handlebar and a headed bolt. Slide hammer screwed into the insert and pull/knock it out using a hammer action against the bolt head. I believe some guys just bashed the insert further in if it wouldn't come out.
Hello mate I am not sure if you have already read this but thought might aswell post it. Check this thread out on the removal of the original fixing... https://www.thetriumphforum.com/threads/bar-end-mirrors-removing-the-original-fixing.9357/
Are you sure Davie ? I have never known the inserts to be threaded into the bars. They could be spot welded in but not threaded ? The tip I gave you should work to pull them out, but if not just hammer them deeper inside the bars which will allow you to fit your new inserts. Another easier option may be to use a longer bolt with the existing insert, have you checked that out ?
Okay! let's look at another way of getting the bastards out! With a torch can you see if there is a hexagon socket in the end of the insert or a screwdriver slot. The insert must have been tightened into the bar using one of those methods. Failing that you need some threaded bar screwed into the insert with a locknut tightened against the insert, then fit two locknuts higher up the rod and see if you can get the insert to unscrew that way. Another option is new handlebars.
Insert has no hex or slot got one out with threaded bar and lock nuts but other one wont budge pictures of the i got out m5 internal m16 external
