Once this lockdown allows the B/B to open I am off to do the Scottish NC 500 but after booking it ,it got me thinking what the Wild Atlantic Coast Route in Ireland is like .I have done the Dingles part of it and was blow away by the beauty of the Dingles .Anyone done the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland and is it worth a trip or is it a bit to much of the same every day .I loved Ireland when I tour it last year and would love to go back so is the Wild Atlantic way worth a go ?
We had to cancel a week in Ireland from 1st May, we were going to stay in Sneem in Kerry and ride out for days of sight seeing. We are hoping that our trip in September with 2 couples from our bike club is still going to happen. Rose and I have visited Eire every year for the last 3 years and love the scenery and the people. The WAW is one of the best rides you will ever do, not fast, but beautiful. In a nutshell, it's worth it!
Yes ...I did some bike show there in Killarney in 2016 and a bit of touring round at the same time. Always wanted to go back.
I've been along the West Coast (Ireland) back in the 80's on a Honda CBX -6 of all things. Back then Ireland was a very cheap place to go and we (I took wife #1 on the pillion) had a great time. The scenery is certainly spectacular although as I recall the roads were full of potholes. We went all the way from Dingle in the south up to Co. Donegal in the North. I've been back several time since (on 4 wheels) and the prices have gone up dramatically, but the local people are as friendly and welcoming as ever they were.
Yes it was though I went with a couple of friends on their Victorys...I was on my last Harley ( switchback) before I gave up with those piles of poo machines after that tour.
Yes the Atlantic way is great not as good as it was but still good. If you get there do the Antrim coast fabulous. And around there they love all bikes and are as friendly. Regards Joe.
Bugger, don’t rub it in my friend. I had a two week trip planned to ride the WAW from 9th June. All cancelled now I’ve been meaning to ride Ireland for years only to have the damned virus come along. Oh well, maybe next year.
Neilb Sorry got carried away as it is my birth place. But same here i should have just got back from Scotland and it didn't happen. But better times are coming again. Regards Joe
Joe, not getting at you at all, mate. I should have been in Wales this week then Ireland next month. Hopefully, next year in better times!
If anybody is interested in watching some touring videos from Ireland and set to some great music, visit you tube and look for "Roadtrooper". Denis makes some brilliant footage well worth watching.
Just go do it when you can. It is fantastic, the roads are very good and the people brilliant. Killarney, Galway and Donegal are great places to stay. We also stayed in Waterford and Kinsale and of course Dublin on our trip a couple of years ago.
NeilB Yes sorry again. But you will get there and you will be welcomed by the Irish. I just love the country north and south i do get carried away when talking about it. Keep us all updated when the trip finally get the go. Tell you what if i can get over the same time i will meet you in the harbour Bar Portrush and buy you a pint. You will love it there as well. Well used to be. Perhaps some of the hometown peeps will give us a run down on the present days. Secretly i miss Ireland and if i could turn back time i never would have left. So you see Mate i am just sopy old Irish man at heart. Regards Joe.
Yes, it is worth it. Don't be expecting good roads tho'. The surface down the west coast is some of the worse I have ever ridden. Wouldn't say the were great riding roads either, compared to the NC500 you will be disappointed, imho. But it's still worth doing. We rode around the coast, from Belfast to Galway. B&B's are plentiful. The north bit of Ireland, past Derry is especially beautiful.
