Well here we are the next instalment! All body panels now finished and fitted. The engine is next on the list and I have started to strip that down. Photo attached before I hide the bike away in a neighbours garage so that I have room for all the engine parts.
@Samsgrandad Nice job. I did the same for a friend quite a few years ago. We all went from Slough to Ireland to tour. It was the only bike that did the trip no problems. There was i think six of us. We got back. What does he do. Yes he sold it for pennies without even telling me.
I had one in the mid 70's, it was a very reliable work horse, the parallel twin motor sounded nice too.
Thanks Wessa! Having got the head and barrels off it is heavily carboned but still on a standard bore and the bores appear to be good so I may be able to rebuild with new pistons and rings but not need a rebore. Fingers crossed!!
Well, the engine is apart now, the bores look ok, hardly any ridge at the top and from first measurement they look to be round and within tolerance. However, look what I found lurking in the bottom of the sump, in amongst about 1/8" sludge there is the remains of something metallic. All I have to do now is work out where it came from!!! It's not piston rings current thinking is a thrust washer from the gear clusters - I will have to check carefully but first there's an awful lot of cleaning and removing 50 years of crud from the crankcases etc.
