After a demo on Triumph Thruxton 1200R I went to start YBR 125 to come home. Nothing. No buzz when turned ignition on. Priming noise. . Tried ignition about 6 times. Turning over no problem. Just not starting. Tried bump start with a shove from a mechanic. . Nowt. Said mechanic watched as i removed panel and got wee toolkit out. 10 meters from workshop..No offer of tools. Spark plug checked. Spark there. Oil and fuel all ok as he asked. Then he said. I need to go and left me. I checked everything. Still wouldnt start after 20 mins of kicking or using starter..I'm in back near workshop and folk coming and going. In full textiles in sunshine. Sales lad i had dealt with came out and joked abou needing to buy the Trhruxton. Then went back into showroom... I went to service desk and explained the situation and test ride on a 12 grand bike i was interested in buying. And the fact i'm about 19 miles from home. Ohh we are rammed and the guys are going on lunch. Yeah. It wont start mate as the fuel pump aint buzzing i said. Ohh you might need to leave it with us. Tho we aren't a Yamaha specialist. I said It is a 125 and the fuel pump aint priming or buzzing and i have tried all i can.. I have tried most things and it is not starting. He goes talks to a guy at a computer who doesn't even look round. Comes back, you will need to leave it with us. I have just been out a test ride on a 12 grand bike that i want to buy. And you cannot help... I will have a look he says. Comes out. Takes key out of ignition and goes to open fuel cap. I said it is filled mate. Still looked. Twat. Then he tried to start it. I said look. It aint buzzing is it. He said.. Is it fuel injected... Yeahhhhh. His reply...Do u have breakdown cover ? Yeah. Just leave it mate. I will call AA it is ok. . And he walked away. Which i did. Lass on phone said, so you are actually at a motorbike garagge ? Yep sure. Okayyy. I will get someone to you. And then they charged me £1.60 for a mars bar and can of juice at service dept. Never asked if i had got help. Nothing. I spent ages on my knees in bike gear checking everything as i waited 50 minutes for AA. Fuses and connections. Everything i could find behind panels and under the tank. Right at back of service department. As 3 lads from workshop sat in sunshine having lunch. SERIOUSLY..... . AA guy arrived and parked at entrance to service beside me. Looked at me and said " Did they not help ". Ehhh nope. As i wiped oil and shite off ma hands on a rag he gave me. Told him what i had checked etc. I turned the ignition on .... It buzzed and primed , then started on the button. Unbelievable. I had obviously done something correct. He looked and laughed. I was raging. Must've been a loose wire or something i fixed . We had a chrortle about it. He was more amazed that these so called dealers never helped. I was a sweaty and angry man when i got home 2 hours later than i thought. The morale of that is...I will be buying a Thruxton. But not from them.
Hi. So I was at my work today and this guy comes in and takes a Thruxton out for a TD. Hes on a Yamaha 125cc and when he goes to leave the bike wont start. So we spoke and I gave him a bump ( didnt work), anyway he gets some tools out I think "he looks like he knows what hes doing"so I leave him, and head back in. So the sales guy goes out and speaks to him hes still checking stuff, so the sales guy leaves him to it. 20 mins later hes in at the desk and says hes stuck so the receptionist tells him we are really busy and because of the weather everyone wants their bike yesterday and the queue to get their bike looked at is 4 weeks atm. So the receptionist goes over and speaks to the manager, and he says the rep. said the right thing, so the rep. comes back and says the same thing again. So the guys like "look I borrowed your 12,000 pound bike earlier" and so the rep goes and has a look and get a dirty look for checking the petrol. So the thing is we cant look at the guys bike cause hes in a bad mood, and we are backed up for the summer, and if we start looking you end up like you have to spend maybe 2 hours fixing it or more and we have all these guys in the same boat , only booked in, and if we do too much, he might say we broke it, and the boss would flip cos its not booked in ( possibly, we had that before, every dealer has! We never saw him before today). So we ask if the guy has breakdown cover and he has, so good stuff. He buys a tin of juice and a mars, and in the mean-time looks at the bike and checks some stuff. The RAC guy shows up and the bike starts and he leaves. Im not being cheeky, honest, I can see another side is all. Goes without saying you should check the bike over.
This is one of those ticklish situations where you both have a point and the outcome turns on the mood of the moment. I have been to that dealership a few times and there is clearly a bit of a demarcation between new Triumph and the rest of the Honda franchise plus clothing, spares and workshop. They have loads of visitors and do not seem particularly quick to engage. If each department see themselves as separate then you are not ‘their’ potential customer especially if you wander unseen from one side to the other. Most workshops are scheduled with labour billed accordingly so queue jumping is disruptive and I bet there are productivity targets! Sprinter’s perspective has some validity. Equally, without knowing the personalities involved - and which side of bed they got out of - it is easy to judge harshly. Me? I would have politely told you I was giving you 15 mins max of mechanic’s time - because of ‘other customer commitments’ and if that did not work for you to either leave it with us or make alternative arrangements. I reckon you would have been best employed poking the sales guy in the chest as your route to workshop assistance. You were just a passing nuisance breakdown looking for a freebie to the rest of the organisation. I learnt a long time ago in the Army. Judge your position from the enemy perspective, not your own. We all make unfounded assumptions based on our own 180 degrees. Checking out the other 180 degrees gives you the full 360. That said, there is something about the customer service attitude in a lot of bike shops that leaves a lot to be desired. I sometimes think that has a lot to do with the average customer!
Yep i can see it from both sides to be honest. I have had dealings with several bike shops / mechanics over many years. Those ones would have given, as you said, a wee bit of mechanic time to assist me. I would happily have paid one of the lads cash on lunchbreak. Some have went above and beyond to assist. Tho those were not large ones like Two Wheels. I know they run tights schedules etc etc and it can have a knock on effect. All i wanted was a bit of assistance. Hey ho. Onwards and upwards in my quest for a Thruxton
Well good luck. Personally I would not buy a new one. I hate the depreciation in that first year! Something like this https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classi...ocation=at_bikes&advert-type=standard-listing would whet my appetite. Run in, read to roll and the odd minor blemish but £3k to the good in my pocket. Get them to throw in a new rear. I would sort my finances and get it couriered from Lancashire like a birthday present to myself.
Most certainly will be looking at a second hand one going by prices. Even the second hand one that the dealer had is over priced compared to what i can get on internet. Will be a cash buyer due to retirement lump sum coming through Thanks for that link.

Not any more, they would much rather sell you a finance package. They get commission from that and from the bike. Last time I bought a car from a dealer, got a price for the car, then said I want finance, knocked monthly payments down until I liked the sale price, got him to write it down, came back next day and said I would buy car and no finance! He was not happy If you need finance, go to a p2p loan company like Zopa. Rates are much better than banks or supermarkets.
We were talking private sales - dealers buy ins are a rip off too! I always favour the guy who is needing cash and whose love affair is cooling.
Was no mention of private, but presumed as he was looking at new or nearly new it was more of a dealer type acquisition.
