Are there any Thruxton RS owners out there who could help, I'm in the market for a retro style bike, and I do like the Kawasaki Z900RS SE a lot, but the more I look at the Thruxton the more I like, however my local dealer doesn't have ny in the showroom to sit on. I do like a more upright position and I'm wondering if there's a ny way I could reduce the lean on the Thruxton and have a more upright seating position with minimum lean angle for myself.
I converted my Thruxton R to flat bars with a kit from ABM. I got mine from these guys. https://www.bikermart.co.uk/Triumph-Thruxton-1200R-2016~-ABM-Superbike-Fat-Bar-Handlebar-Kit Might be worth giving them a call to confirm if the kit will fit your RS.
Thanks, I do like the look but I could imagine the standard riding position could be a strain for me, hence looking for something more upright, but the Thruxton is a stunning looking bike with everything good about Triumph on it…
I was in the same position as you when I got mine last year…had it narrowed to three bikes Z900 Café, Speed Twin and Thruxton. In the end the TTRS is in the garage, the position wasn’t aggressive enough to warrant NOT getting it over the other two. I’ve wanted one for years, but past injuries to my right elbow and shoulder had me thinking it would be out of the question. Sat on all three and got some pain, nothing more or less on either bike, figured if I’m getting pain on either bike I’m getting what I want. The pain isn’t something that “hurts”, on a scale probably 2-4, I notice it but after awhile I don’t, so… I only ride 2-300 miles at a time and by the next day I’m GTG, could also take a couple Advil before, but haven’t. Couple things…there’s ZERO wind protection and at speed (40mph+) the wind takes a lot of weight off the arms, more so at highway speeds, plus I’ve replaced the seat with a Corbin Gunfighter…slightly lower ½-1 inch. I’m 6’1 and 250, if I had to guess you’re probably lighter maybe shorter than I so the “wind help” speed will be lower…I hate driving through town. You mentioned neither bike is a Thruxton, I knew going in there might be “issues”, I would have hated to get any of the other two bikes as my heart was set on the TTRS, but as mentioned past injuries I deal with. I think it can be made “comfortable”, but the whole Thruxton/Café bike…not made to be if you look at the history of the Café bikes. I’ve heard riser help a great deal, someone makes a handlebar conversion, which I think ruins the look of the bike, but not my bike and not knowing the pain/issues you have to deal with. Lastly…if you are having issues with a bike maybe you need to think about a different one, someone has to bring that up. Good luck
I'll add this - bizarrely perhaps, I found the TTR far more comfortable that the R9T that preceded it, and for which the ergonomics are theoretically far less aggressive. The Thruxton is also an extremely beautiful bike, more so than the Speed Twin or Z900, IMO. Performance-wise it's absolutely superb, to the extent that I'd say it's trackable should you want to go down that route (and comes with race-quality components, too).
Hi Tony, good to see a fellow Tz on here, I’m going to have a drive over to York as they have a used model in I should be able to test drive.
Hi matey - yes, there are a couple of others too (@Gyp for one). Anyway, you’ll love the TTRS… it’s impossible not too. Hope the ergonomics work for you.
Thanks, do you find it gives a more forgiving upright riding position now? Put the Thruxton RS into a ergonomics simulator and its how's a 20 deg lean angle for my height, more than any bike i've owned tbh...
Absolutely it improves the riding position. It is almost the same as the Speed Twin now. Like many I found the clip ons were causing issues for me, but since my conversation I’m able to ride without any problems at all. The other key benefit was I did not need to sell the bike, which is what I was considering.
