Hopefully I get along with it! ;-) After x2 765rs and Diavel in between (that was awful) - plus zx10 /R1 from years gone by. Having something with 100bhp isn’t quite what I thought I was after - idea the ideal would have been something a ‘little bit faster’ than the 765rs. Like a Ducati V2, or MV Brutale. However with zero bikes in dealership my options have been some what limited. And it’s the old How fast do I actually enjoy going. The Speed looks amazing, 180bhp and all the handling - it’s a 765rs +++++++ And so. I enjoyed loved the looks of the Thruxton, love the ‘ton up boys / cafe racer stories - and having watched ‘44 teeth and Lamb Chops YouTube review’ I feel I know what is in store (in a good way). I can not wait to ride it, to park and look at it, enjoy riding for the sake of riding and …. Actually. My only concern is 1. I hate cleaning with a passion - I suspect lll need to clean it 2. I have a 200 round trip to Watford to pick it up 1 week to go!
I'm in the process of swapping my 2016 Thruxton R and Speed Triple RS for a new 1200Triple RS. The only regret is selling the Thruxton but the whole point of this is to have one bike that can provide the same level of enjoyment as both and provide room in my garage. This should tell you how well the Thruxton performs, my sons think I am faster on the Thruxton ! I do ride on A and B class roads and avoid motorways like the plague. I think I will deeply regret not having the Thruxton. As an aside I have a Dart screen, V and H UK exhausts available. Some on here swapped the low risers for higher ones. I did as well but imo it ruined the bike so I swapped them back to the low risers. Even typing this makes me queasy about the Thruxton going.
Funnily enough, I'm dropping my Thruxton R off to Watford on the same day, and will be riding off on a new Tiger 900 GT Pro. I love the TTR, though, and would have been over the moon to have been able to keep it too.
Picked up my Thruxton RS yesterday Had a long ride back from the dealer on the motorways and give I’d ridden down on a 765rs, I have thought with it’s low clip ons that the Thruxton would be really uncomfortable on the way home. But no, super comfy. Can’t wait to get it run in now
So - Done the first 300miles. A couple of things. 1. Running in Triumphs is usually a nightmare - 1,000miles of watching your rev's. Bonus on this bike. It's got so much torque, it doesn't bother me all that much being 'rev limited' 2. It feel pretty quick. Comparing to the Diavel I owned, which probably had 50% more power. The Thruxton feels a lot more spritely - I suspect this is down to the fact the Diavel had massive traction and the riding position meant it was all very underwhelming. 3. I don't miss the quick shifter. Considering I was after an R1 / Speed 1200 etc, as I actually wanted 'more tech' - I have really got on board with the less tech manual nature of the bike. 4. I just flippen love how it looks. 5. I never really believed 100bhp was enough for the road. But. Well. At least for me. It's fast enough, and better - So full of character Some negatives. 5. Its a pain to fill up. Had more petrol 'squirt' out of the tank when filling up, than any bike, ever. 6. I suspect I am going to hate to clean it. As. I hate cleaning. Any tips for keeping the wheels nice and clean? 7. Thats it.
It’s interesting reading the comments about the RS…I’m picking up mine in a couple weeks after little over 12 years without a bike and can hardly wait, plus I already have a pile of stuff I’m adding to it. I have always loved the Café look and after finishing 75% of a ’72 BMW R75/5 into a Café, found out the title was toast…LONG story. Ended up parting out the entire bike and made a ton more money than what I had in it, such is life; also, lesson learned about titles. Anyway, my first thought is riding position would not work for me, so I went to a local dealer and sat on a Speed Twin and the Thruxton, to me but about the same, so the TTRS it is.
FWIW - I've got a 16' Thruxton R and am 6'2" with a 34" inseam and I'm pretty comfortable. I haven't been on any ride (yet) that was more than 3 hours but I think much more than 3 hours my wrist will start to "hurt". I'm not sure if the RS has the same oddly shaped handlebars as mine but I ended up going with the Ram Mount brand because they have a design they call the Jaw mount which works flawlessly. It's a modular setup so I can switch between a GoPro mount and a phone mount without actually taking the base off the bars. It's pretty slick and holds my phone and GoPro very securely.
