So, there i was in the garage, bike taxed, leathers on and a lovely sunny morning for a blast, clutch in press the button and one revolution of starter motor then all i'm getting is a buzzing sound? Checked battery thats ok, it's been on optimate for a few weeks and the meter tells me its ok? Its a speed triple 1050 2008 if anyones got any ideas please :frown: oh it's only done just over 2,000 miles.
Still sounds like a fooked battery to me. Got a set of jump leads to see if it will start ? Stupid question but the kill switch isn't on is it? Neutral light on? 2000 miles on a 2008 that's only a about 450 miles a year..... Already over that on my October 2012 Speed Triple
Hi richard, not the kill switch, neutral light is on and the battery reads just over 12v, drops to 9v when starter pressed but comes back up to 12v when released.
If you have a couple of strong mates a bump start could work, at least you would see that the engine turns over ok. Be worth checking out the main fuse and starter solenoid, good luck hope you get it sorted.
The buzzing, does it sound like an electrical arcing sound? Could be the solenoid in the starter not kicking in, if the bike has stood for a while it could be slightly seized. if you can get to the starter give it a tap with something hard while holding the button, this usually kicks things back into life if it is. Or as mentioned above the battery could be shot and it doesn't have the power to turn the engine over although holding some charge?
NFG..battery..is my bet also...its now 5 years old and even though it been on an optimate it not been used...
hi mate tried shorting the solinold out to see if it will kick into action, or again slightly tap very gently to try and release it as it maybe sticky, try wd 40 it may help.
Right here's the latest, i put the bike back on the optimate last night and came in to do some googling, ended up on loads of different forums and the popular answer was battery, especially one who had the same symptons (battery reading 12v) who found out he had a dead cell and didn't have the cranking power to turn over starter. So first thing this morning rang local bike shop, yes we have gel battery for your bike £38, right i'll come and get it. Before i leave i'll just have one more try, first time on the button she fires up, starter turning over lovely, plenty of ooomph, took her out for a blast and a few stops and starts and all's well  still think the battery is a bit suss though, i'll have to keep an eye on it. Thanks for all your replies :upyeah: Oh yeah i've only had her a year so the low mileage isn't all down to me
You can order battery's online they come with a bottle of acid if you ever need it I've always found them cheaper than local bike shops too. Glad you got it running!
For the price of a new batter it's not worth the hassle, you can guarantee one day it will let you down miles away from home!!
