Some interesting responses! I can't agree with Steve J that they all end up in Corsas. I'm sure some of the young lads do but a lot of the scooter riders I see are older blokes and women. I had a conversation with a guy who did some building work for me. He turned up for the estimate on a scooter in shorts, no gloves, tracksuit top and an open face helmet. When I asked why he didn't wear any decent gear he said he never went fast enough to worry about that sort of thing. I suggested that he run into the road and throw himself down face first and see what happened, he still didn't see what the issue was.

Until I started reading/responding to this thread I must admit I didn't think about it too much. I've just read through and I can't say I even agree with some of my own replies. I remember in the late '70s going on MAG ride-outs to complain about the helmet law! I didn't know that the CBT had reference to PPE. At the end of the day, we are all adults and responsible for our own actions. All we can do is try to help and if that doesn't work, then they're masters of their own destiny, as we all are, so fuck 'em!

I wonder whether part of the problem with older folks is that if they passed their car test before 2001 (according to the government website) they don't need to do CBT if they stick to a 50cc scooter so will never have been given advice about PPE.

My feeling is that we're really talking about teenagers here - us older folks have more of a sense of our own mortality!

Unfortunately the riders that spurred this original post were all "older". 30s and 40s I'd guess given body shape and what I could see of their faces in the open face helmets.

Not really. I didn't say in the OP that they weren't young kids

I shake my head every time I see these idiots riding in shorts and T shirts traveling about 6" from the boot of a car in front but, then I remember what a knob I was like on an FS1E at 16.
    Rode in trainers
    Rode in Jeans
Rode everywhere as fast as possible.

If of course we are talking of younger riders
