Trading Standards Officers attended the London Motorcycle Show and found a large number of traders selling substandard or fake kit. Follow the link to read the story. I know one retailer who some years ago sold fake Riossi Motorcycle Leathers, he was handed a Suspended Sentence, he is still selling leathers and other goods under a different name, although I have no knowledge if these are fake or genuine, hence I have not named the company. Also a word of warning if you are thinking of purchasing goods from Scott Leathers, first read the customer reviews.

I would appreciate if you would elaborate on the Scott Leather insinuation. I have three of their suits, one now almost 20 years old and still in fantastic condition. My latest is their race suit, which I am absolutely delighted with. Prior to buying it I ordered and tried numerous suits from a range of well known manufacturers incuding Alpinestars, RST, Icon, Buse and none came close to the quality of the one from Scott Leathers. Jim the owner could not have been more helpful and accomodating. Honestly I for one cannot recommend Scott Leathers enough.

Always good to hear about good services from suppliers, however the report in @Iceman post is very worrying though.

I got a good riding buddy, best friend actually, who did logistical security for Tesla and is a licensed customs broker. According to him, the CCP counterfeit goods industry is an absolute global cancer that is ultra-aggressive and barely containable. They dismiss almost all global trade regs and agreements and implement huge, international multi-tiered operations in order to flood the world economy with counterfeit goods wherever and whenever they can. Chances are everyone in here owns something they either cherish or is of value that is fake and they don't even know it, myself included.

And no one we elected to do something about it will do anything about it because they have them in their pockets. Bought and paid for.

I completely agree which is why I would like his comment on Scott Leathers explained a bit. To lead with "A word of warning" is very off putting. Reviews can be a double edged sword....good and bad, honest or malicious. Scott Leathers were not mentioned in the Bennetts article and I know the owner Jim is well respected in both the motocross and racing fraternity. I think if one is going to cast aspersions then all relevant information should really be fully disclosed.

Hi Wessa, a few posts have asked me to elaborate on Scott Leathers, one specific example is their race gloves, Scott Leathers advertise these with the following description. Manufactured from highly abrasion resistant hide with a pre-formed carbon Keprotec fibre composition providing optimium protection of the back of the hand, wrist and fingers. Elasticated cuff with velcro wrist check strap. Well I bought a pair of these, the first issue was the velcro stitching split for the wrist fastening after using them for the first time, I had difficulty getting hold of Scott Leathers, so took them into my local reputable leather repair specialist, who fitted and stitched new velcro's, well happy days I thought, on the third ride out the stitching "burst" on the protection patches. Imagine if a rider was unfortunate to have an off these gloves would have failed. I did manage to speak with Scott Leathers and was told to return them for a replacement pair. I sent them first class post recorded delivery, after a week I again managed to speak with them to get an update, but was told it would be 2 weeks before they would have my size in stock. Scott Leathers do not make these Race Gloves, they buy them in, although it is unclear who actually makes them nor the country of origin. I usually buy the RST Tractech Evo 4 Race Gloves, but thought I would buy the Scott Leather ones. Now this situation appears not unique to myself. It may well be that my pair escaped the quality control process, that said it would not be of any comfort if they failed in any accident. I will see how the replacement pair stand up, hopefully on more that 3 rides. For the 2022 TT and other events, those gloves would not have met the requirements. I have copied a link that explains the standards. Would I have trusted a 10 year or older old climbing rope whilst mountaineering, no way all kit deteriorates in time, it's a very personal choice what we wear and how long we keep using kit for, I would never criticise anyone on their choice, if someone want's to ride in shorts and flip flops, denim jeans and jacket, or whatever so be it, it's their choice, for me personally I want kit that will do it's job for what activity I am doing in a worst case scenario. Ride safe all.
TT riders must wear CE-approved kit in 2022 racing (bennetts.co.uk)

Great news you got a replacement pair. Do keep us updated with how you get on with them. Still doesn't indicate Scott Leathers are supplying counterfeit goods and imagine if we all decided not to use BREMBO brake pads because the friction pad is known to seperate from the backing plate or never buy Triumphs because they are known to leak oil, fit dodgy quickshifters that cause damage to the gearboxes, fit innertubes that the valves seperate from the tube causing instant deflation, all of which could prove rather dangerous should they happen whilst being used. The point being to include a business that provides quality goods in such a way to imply they sell dodgy items is not really fair. I dont get the inclusion of flip flops and climbing rope and modern motorcycle denims have equal or greater abrasion protection than leather. As for age of protective equipment, if made with quality material they will last, eg the ISS.
You made a very valid and useful point about counterfeit goods being sold at bike shows and I dare say online, my only issue is tarring Scott Leathers with the same brush. I am not affiliated to them in any way but having met the owner and his workers and seen the setup and bought his suits I feel your insinuation is unfair. Yes you had an issue with a pair of gloves. however this will have been resolved if the second pair meet your requirements.
Roll on summer, lets all stay safe and enjoy our motorcycles. Do let us know how the gloves hold up.

Hopefully they'll be at the Scottish motorcycle show this year as well!
I was at the show in 2020 (mere days before lock down), and there were definitely a few dodgy traders there. I was in the market for a pair of kevlar jeans and was looking at a pair for a good price... too good a price thought I... they were very keen on a sale, but I couldn't find any tags or what not that indicated they were legitimate or safe at all. Very easy to walk away from that one.
