If you have sea legs, and fancy some alternative to bikes, day after day, then this could be a great day out.

X3 guys on BMWs that I kept bumping into.

A nice bit of architecture in Dornoch.

My bed in the bunkhouse for x3 nights. Clean, tidy and adequate at a sensible price.

    Is that it?

Flow country, looking towards the Crask inn. How can we really justify the eyesore of wind turbines, in such an unspoilt natural area?

What a lovely set up someone has here, the deer herd, hard to make out at this resolution, is down to the right.

    Are we done?

    Meet Haren.
Haren (light grey jacket in front of my bike) was at the " only bloody Harleys" meeting, and so as he had an interesting bike, sorry @Sandi T couldn't help it :joy:
I went to have a look.
    20250824_134845.jpg
Him and his girlfriend set off from Singapore 18 months ago.
    20250824_134837.jpg
He was riding this KTM 500, and she was riding a Honda CRF 300, although I didn't actually meet her. They have been through many countries already, but by the sound of it, are nowhere near journeys end.

And for the return journey, it looks like I had a hitchhiker.
The tent was very wet from last night so I put it back up to dry when I got home.
    Look what I found?

Hopefully @Dawsy I kept it varied and entertaining, with a touch of most things thrown into the mix.

The last thing I wanted was it to sound like some junior school piece.... first we went there, then we went somewhere else, then.... I'm sure you get the idea.

Thanks @Eldon this has been one of the most engaging and informative threads I've ever seen on a forum and I really enjoyed it.
Couple of wee snippets for info. Dornoch Cathedral, just across the road from your photo of the Jail, now a shop, still called the Jail, was where Madonna got married to Guy Ritchie. The place was bouncing for days before the event and Dornoch made a good few quid from it.
The passing place sign full of bullet holes, is Red Deer poachers zeroing their sights at night. A torch beam is shone at the sign, then the shooter zero's in on the centre. They use a high powered floodlight to light up the deer's eyes on the hill and speed and stealth are of the essence, unless you want to spend a night in the cells.
Windfarms, don't get me started. They are not built by SSE, as some may think. These are all built by foreign companies, SSE just manage the transmission onto the National Grid. A true blight on our beautiful landscape, oh yes.
A funny but true one to end on.
Just before Madge and Guy tied the knot, the Priest, (or whatever he was), came into the engineering shop where I worked at the time, in Evanton. He needed the weather cock stripped back and painted. This was done and delivered back up to Dornoch in a striking gold colour. Two weeks later, the Priest came in to pay for it and was spotted by Rico, the painter who did the work. Rico was a complete headcase, with no filter on what he said, shouted at the top of his voice, "I painted your cock"!!!
My Father, who was the workshop manager, nearly had a fit and wanted to throttle him.

    Only in the Highlands...:joy:

    Nice snippet addendums @JackWS

When I visited Dornoch, they were trimming some trees down in the centre which I think was in that churchyard you mentioned.

Besides being a motorcyclist, I am also a legal deer stalker, but unfortunately poaching will always exist. The current government policy on eradicating one of Scotlands most notably recognised features is just stupidly mind boggling bonkers.
Glen Feshie estate was it? where carcases were left to rot a few years ago was also ridiculous and the persons responsible should've been taken to task.

A total waste of an animal and good food, utmost respect for such animals in the main, irrespective of what the antis say, comes from the people and farmers who manage them.

Here's some I prepared earlier ...... lovely :yum

Ahh, @Eldon. So it wasn't "only bloody Harleys" as by my count there were at least two non-Harleys. Eldon's and Haren's. ;):joy:

P.S. Thanks for a fabulous, entertaining thread! :grinning:

@Eldon brilliant thread, I thoroughly enjoyed that! Many years ago I stalked on invitation at an estate near Dornoch. Went out on boxing day morning, deep snow, glorious sunshine. We got back with 5 hinds ( obviously) 3 for the stalker and 2 for me. Beautiful area.

Do you know a Nigel Pickering by any chance? He used to be in Burton-in-Kendal.

Overall, the bike performed impeccably and the dash showed an average of 52 mpg. The fuel cap tab snapping is just one of those things, an expensive mistake on my behalf. Tyres ordered, jet wash and clean today.
Great bike and so comfortable, the seat is a massive step up from the 675 version. I could see it being too small and compact for someone over 6' so you might want to think about that if considering one.
Luggage wise, a Bagster tank bag worked well on a bra strap thing which now has a ladder in from the jacket zip. This has been there sometime, gradually getting worse, so I already have a replacement on the shelf. The Oxford Aqua bag is an excellent product and I convinced one of my mates to get one, ideal for the job.
The twin trip meters on the dash is a nice touch. I have trip 1 set to "manual reset" to keep an overall reading, 1280 miles in this case. The trip 2 is set to "auto 12 hrs" so each day sets off fresh. Individual days varied from 68 miles to something around 250.
The TC light lit up a few times so I know that's working :imp: and the abs worked occasionally but without being too intrusive.

My bike is now on 15000 and I have no intention of changing it as it just simply works!

Probably not the best for two up use, but as a solo pocket rocket it ticks the box. Slick gearbox and a really good torquey, but also revvy engine is a peach and more than fast enough for road use. Quickshifter worked faultless.

Just been doing a bit of reading on that Overlanders Oxford event and it sounds great, might have to go next year.
Here's a bit more background on Haren, as he's doing a presentation there.

The petrol flap looks an expensive cock up.

What's people thoughts on 1/4 turn "Race"fuel caps?

The fact it mentions race in the title, just switches me off somehow. Ooh good I'm going to save 10 seconds at Asda
    Really!
