Loud pipes save lives, maybe sometimes at best. Was next to a person in a car with the windows down, my loud sv650 M4 exhaust was only 5 feet from her ears, when she started to switch lanes, I let out an very loud clutch in 11,000 rpm burst. No reaction, hit the brakes to avoid being shoved into oncoming (head on) traffic.

There's a few boy racers in custom?? cars for want of a better discription round where I live who's exhausts are twice as loud as any of the local bikes, and they never seem to get pulled.

Some of those Harley riders are going to be paying some hefty wonga then. Even some of their standard exhausts seem loud.
Does make me wonder though. Sensible laws seem to take forever to actually get voted through. These things just appear and we accept them.
I expect a cabinet minister has a company or a "mate" who supplies them

I seriously doubt anyone who changes their pipes for ones that are louder did it because they thought it would save their life.

They did it because it because:

    A) They think they improved performance
    B) They look better
    C) They shed a few kg
    D) They sound great
    E) Annoy their neighbours

This is the exact issue I have here in Wycombe. They all have elderly M5s or AMG 63's with V8 engines and little or no muffling. Every late evening they roar around the town waking the dead!

Apart from the awesomeness of a bit of exhaust burblage, i was out in the van today and i heard 2 bikes coming up behind me today before i could see them in the mirrors. It certainly made me think that at least it really does have the potential for a car driver to check their mirrors to see what was coming up and potentially stop a car pulling out into an over taking bike.
I thought perhaps there really is something to the loud pipes save lives which i never believed before.
I was thinking before this perhaps baffles in might be more responsible now its baffles out until i'm made to put them in!

Certainly seems stock exhausts are getting bigger and heavier as the noise /emission regulations get worse. There might be room on a car but not on bikes.
A noisy horn might be the answer as noisy exhausts are going to end up with a widespread ban it seems.
