I read these reports of sanctions being taken and wonder what is actually involved... how much difference does it make? Related to sanctions for human rights violations, I have a difficult time not being cynical when I read an article like this. There are human rights violations all around the globe--why target these countries in particular? It seems that when I've gone digging in the past to try to answer this question, there's always something in it for us as a country. They have some natural resources we want (like oil) or military or border positioning, etc. It doesn't generally seem to be very altruistic and nobel even if couched that way.

Can't disagree. The only hope you can have is that once inside she'll get hers. Not really justice, but maybe a few months of suffering and abuse at the hands of others will balance things up a tad. But again, where were social services? Is the system lacking somewhere, or is an episode like this simply going to happen periodically?
