A friend with a Bruce Forsyth chin has a similar issue. What makes it worse is he takes a size small and most are just not long enough front to back.
Thats interesting @Sandi T as I have a 3 year old Shoei Qwest and was recently looking, but not yet pulled the pin, on upgrading to a Shoei GT air2. Might put that on hold now after your post, cheers.
I had a Shoei Qwest, too, awhile back, @Eldon. I really liked it. And at the time I liked having the drop down dark smoked inner visor as well. But that might have been when I learned about the Snell ratings and how there's something about that inner visor that precludes helmets that have them from being able to receive Snell approval. You may want to double check that, though. I've heard the GT Air is a terrific helmet and wouldn't mind having one in my helmet collection that's for sure. I recently saw this informative article comparing and contrasting the various motorcycle helmet rating systems. https://pickmyhelmet.com/motorcycle-helmet-safety-ratings/
Wow what a can of worms I’ve opened! Does anyone know if British Police wear these type of flip up helmets? I’ve seen them wearing Shoei but not sure if they are flip type? Reason I ask is I know their training is very thorough and also they attend numerous fatal crashes, I’d expect that would have an affect on what helmets they wear?
I believe the neotec 2 has some sort of rating that allows it to be worn in the open position too which not a lot of flip ups have
I was under the impression snell ratings were not a reliable test rating. CE approval being the better standard. Are modular helmets what I/we in the U.K. call flip helmets? This is all becoming very confusing.
That is my understanding as well @andyc1 . This was mentioned to me by the helmet specialist in the J&S store where I bought mine. And @Glenn2926 I agree, good enough for the UK police it works for me.
For sheer practicality and comfort, modular's rule IMO. I had a Schuberth before my current Neotec 2 and I though it was overrated and not in the same class as the Shoei. I've had a few Arai's in the past and the one thing that annoyed me about them was the old fashioned D ring strap where others have click type buckles, far easier to operate with cold fingers. I mentioned this to a guy on the Arai stand at a bike show some years back and he said they stick with the D ring system as it's more reliable which I thought was a lame excuse. Maybe it's some racing regs that mandate it's use but for road use a modern buckle is the way to go IMO.
Strange, both of my brothers that use flip helmets say the opposite. One uses a brand new very expensive Shoei and the other a cheaper LS2. They have both used full face helmets in the past and both say the full face was quieter. This does make sense as the wind passing over the join on flip helmets must make some noise. I’ve never fancied one and am now using my first adventure style helmet, a NEXX X WED2. This was the only adventure style helmet with integral sun visor.
