I am testing my 1977 T140 charging system with a multimeter. When I get the meter close to the running bike the meter is erratic at best. I am using Champion N4 plugs which is causing the erratic meter readings.
As these plugs are not R rated I need a recommendation for a multimeter that will do the job. I believe it has to have EMI suppression.
    Thanks.

The coils are the likely culprit ! Build a Faraday cage , put aluminium foil about an inch or more over and above the coils. A large old metal kitchen strainer ??
Then try your Meyer readings again.

Hmmm….food for thought. Thanks for the reply. My meter worked fine when I had R plugs in it.

Get some suppressor caps for the plugs? They reduce EMI.

youre using a modern digital multi-meter?

can you buy a cheap analog instrument from an elctronics store? radioshack used to sell a little VOM for less than ten bucks. no electromagnetic issues at all.

    modern is not necessarily appropriate.
