This I am going to have to visit seeing as it is in the U.K. and being the only rotating boat lift in the world.
I will not pretend that I knew of its existence until 5 mins. ago, this thread looks like it is going to educate and keep me occupied for the rest of my life.
Brilliant Dougie, thanks for that, andyc1 also mentioned the Falkirk wheel and Concorde which I have seen.

    Brilliant that tc
Just shows you how the application of modern technology can make big projects look simple.

Good bit of military technical training film Andy, 60 years old but still very relevant.
There has been some exceptionally clever engineers over the years much of the expertise being developed through war machinery requirements.

Funny enough you do get exceptionally clever people designing stuff like that, with the outcome of driving a single speed pencil sharpener or similar.
They would bloody well bankrupt you if you let them have enough freedom.

Advancements in medicines, surgery, aircraft, you name it, all advanced through war or the threat of it.

Mass production was not started by Mr Ford, but by the Springfield Rifle company!!!
War is indeed a great driving force for technological advancements.

Great documentary on BBC I-Player One
The Forth Road Bridge, six years to build in the 1950/60s and the longest stretch of suspended bridge in Europe at that time.
I have been across it a good few times and it always makes me admire the pioneering spirit of the people who built it. In one word, Marvellous!

I love the British canal system and some of its engineering often 200 years ago is frankly breath taking

tunnels, miles long and lasers hadn't been dreamt of, 200 year old aqueducts still with the original seals, locks, cuttings, boat lifts even a swinging aqueduct plus plenty of pubs and boats almost as fast as Harleys...

I've been to the Five Rise Locks at Bingley many times John, they are very impressive.
I've cycled a lot of the canal towpaths in yorkshire plus canoed on a good few stopping at pubs along the way, youve just got to watch your balance after a few bevvies.
Fortunately there is a lot of interest in narrow boats and canal travel which has justified the upkeep of the canal networks.
As you quite rightly say breath taking engineering, along with the railways all skilfully built with hard manual labour.

We were lucky enough to have a narrowboat for 12 or more years as the kids were growing up only parted with it about 4 years ago. We were based in Cheshire and Northamptonshire for a while so have cruised most of the midland and the Thames. I miss it and don't rule going back to it, it seems boats and bikes will always be part of my life and like bikers there's some great characters on the cut.

Not one of your stupid style over substance aesthetic over strength modern abominations, An example of "Build it, engineer it to last.
This new idea of lifespan is poor resource management. Our cities and landscape have two realities "Replace in 40 years" and " What the Victorians built ".

Viaduct on the A82 at loch lomond was opened 2/3 years ago, before then they had "Temporary" traffic lights for 30 years!..brilliant road (when it's not busy!)
