    Do.

Nothing like somebody else’s misfortunes to keep your own in perspective!

Folks, if you have a favourite wrecker for parts list it here... trying to score a set of cases and googling “used bonneville engine cases” is yielding nothing but eBay hits

Cal, I think I have found a set of cases. Can I message you and confirm it is what I need? The price is excellent.

Welcome to the forum Air, it seems like you are properly introduced to some of the great minds here. Good luck with all the welding and repairs. Hope you can enjoy your bike soon!

    Hey all, a quick update.

I did snag some new cases. A friend of the family rebuilds engines and will be building it over the winter for me. The cases apparently look absolutely brand new which is very exciting!!

I’m estimating total cost at around $500. We managed to get the cases on eBay for $200!

You said it! Gives me a chance to give the bike some love while the engine is out as well. Stand by for lots of questions on restoring minor rust spots, cleaning up chrome etc to make her look as good as she can.

The project begins! I am blessed to have a buddy who is a mechanic. Helped me get the engine out last night. Next step is shipping it to Ontario!

The engine rebuild itself my father and a family friend will be doing. In the meantime I will be trying to get everything else in really good shape. There is a lot of chrome rust unfortunately, I will probably be talking to you guys at various points to see what can be done to make x and y parts look better etc! For example... how do I clean up the stock aluminum wheels?

What is the best way to save/restore rusty chrome without having to re-dip?

I think you’re definitely right about “saving it” in terms of making it look perfect again but is there a way to clear away the remaining rust and polish the remaining chrome, see how that looks? Only other option is blasting the chrome that is rusty and painting it a gloss black to match the side covers... my buddy thinks I should do that and heat wrap the pipes but I’m not so sure about that

It’s definitely peeling in spots. Rear Suspension, rear frame hoop by the seat. What do you think, sandblast and paint gloss black?

As to the exhaust headers they are very blue/black but they are also off the bike currently so perhaps could clean. Or maybe do a light cafe and heat wrap

Will do. At some point I think someone just said to keep it here but I certainly don’t mind! Thanks for the heads up :)
