Yep, but ticks all the boxes for what I needed. Small, 100+ bhp, no bigger than 1600, cheap, handle fairly good, I break it, I can fix it.

Yes it is the early Midlands gearbox, all quiet for now. Supposedly using the correct oil and not slogging them in 5th will see them last ok. It's the fifth gear shaft bearing that goes and synchro wear. Using MTF94 is supposed to help prevent these happening.

Plugs and oil changed today. Has to use breaker bar to get sump plug out and oil filter housing off. Guess not been done for a few years.

Got some fancy Millers Motorsport oil, designed for more abuse than normal. Got it for not much more than usual oil, so happy to give it a go. Always use Millers oil in the bike, trusted brand.

I used to navigate in 12 car rallies as a mere yoof in the 70's. My mates big brother had a Mexico and then RS1600. I did it once when my mate was ill and aparently was a far better map reader and navigator so got the job for the next few events.

Also did a bit of stage rallying in the 80's but that was so effing expensive and our old Group 4 Escort was way outclassed by Group N Sierra Cosworths.....

I looked at rallying, proper. But the costs are horrendous. Tyres, entry fee, support, you are looking at £1000 just there. And getting the car up to specification, all the seat belts and rest of it in date. And this all for 5 stages. Just not possible on my wage.

So we do 12 car rallies, and other low level stuff.

Yep. Was the cost that killed it for us. Bloody good fun though! That's part of the reason I have stayed with drag racing over the years, you can be competitive on a tight budget.

Upper strut brace fitted, do the lower at work up on the ramp next week. It is red, just looks orange in the photo ????
Nice design, turnbuckle in the brace actually adds some pre-compression to it.

    IMG_20181025_111743.jpg

Mudlaps fitted. Should keep some of the shite off the body and limit stone chips.

That's the lower strut brace fitted. Got the kids to do it at school(good excuse to use the lift;)). I did swing on the bolts after they fitted it.

I can see why you need one. The front of the lower wishbone is attached to the big solid subframe, but the rear is just attached to the body ????
    Stupid B*W design:confounded:

Also touched up and finished waxoyl'ing.

Just back from our first event, a night navigational rally and a maiden win in our class. Admittedly it is the novice section, but a wins a win. Beat second place by four minutes and 34 penalty points. Managed our lowest penalty points total to date, and we were actually third quickest on the road.

Car is seriously filthy. Got it wrong on a wee grassy triangle in the road, mud and grass on the roof !!! :p

    Well done. Onwards and upwards!
Is this part of a club championship?

Yeah, its part of the Solway Car Club championship. My daughter and I are leading the Novice 12 Car Championship and looks like I'm going to get 2nd place Novice overall and my daughter is going to be 2nd place in the Ladies championship.

The club runs 2 'proper ' rallies a year at which we marshal, then they run '12 Car' (night navigational with maximum of 12 cars) rallies, Grass autotest and tar autotests.

Tar autotest cars are too specialist to use a road car, plus the punishment you give them is cruel, doing J-turns and doughnuts etc., real car breakers. The good guys run cars stripped of everything, all trim and dash and even the support frames under the bonnet and in doors. The cars visibly shimmy when sat on tickover:eek::p

Got the Mini to do the '12 car' rallies and the grass autotests next year.

Great results, how many rounds left?

I'm guessing the autotests are a bit liike motogymkana but on 4 wheels. The tarmac ones being harder to organise since everything is open on Sundays now.

Got 2 12 Car Rallies to go, last of the year.

Yeah tar tests like that, we have a military range that we are allowed to use, so we're ok for a track.

The grass ones are the difficult ones to get land. Think of a 20 pairs of cones set 100m apart on a nice grass rolling field. More like a rally stage on grass, than the doughnuts around cones type affair that a lot of clubs do. Does rip up the grass a fair bit, so farmers not so keen to let us on.

So got a hold of some 15" vauxhall steel wheels (same pcd of 4x100), and the kids at school are cleaning them up ready for painting.
My tyres have arrived, 185 / 60 x15 gravel rally remoulds, half the price of the genuine article at £120 delivered. Only problem is they look huge!

A boy on the Mini FB page rallies Mini's proper and uses the same size, but a different manufacturer. So will have to wait and see if enough clearance under the arches. Should give a bit of a lift, due to the height difference over the std road tyre, which is no bad thing.

We'll see next week when there fitted on the rims.

Use inner tubes, stops the tyre coming off the rim when running hard in the dirt. And if it does move, no air lost.

    Two for two.
Second 12 Car Rally tonight in the wee mini. And a follow up novice win. Nearly fecked up by me flying past a junction, but managed to keep our heads, retrace and get the checkpoint. Lost 10 minutes, but better than losing points on wrong direction.
Beat the second place team by 2 point's, so it was close. You could see the disappointment in their faces :laughing::laughing:

Had a FUN 11.5 mile section along some very twisty singletrack last night, by the end of it the brakes were stinking and definitely fading. Near my house, so been along these roads, loads of times on mountain bikes, KTM and my old Series Land Rover, so know them very well. Nobody on these lanes at night, so can go as hard as you can go, but never get up to 60, so all legal ;). Section started 1.5 miles before this, had a couple of minutes to work out route, slow through the village at the start, and only took us 20 minutes in total, see section time TC7 to TC8 below. So i reckon this section took about 15 mins @ 40mph avg. Bloody going some on road not much wider than the mini:p

    Front brace (pair) £120
    Tyres £120
    Wheels £10
    Discs £50
    £1050

    BOLLOX :D

@Dozers Dad - What are you, my bloody wife ????

    :p:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

shhhh - i've no mentioned I will need new pads to go with the discs. onto Ebay - how much for EBC ???

It doesn't matter, I got my 'FUN' fund from selling the old Bonnie. This was one reason it went, I could see more fun from my money, than having an old bike sitting looking pretty in the garage. (Got the Aprilia for that)

Much better to spend £1k+ and have an absolute riot driving around the countryside with my daughter at crazy speeds.
