    I can attest to that.

Back in the late sixties, one summer school holidays down Corby Tube Works, I was working my shift on the tube straightening furnace. I was advised by the charge-hand to be wary not to cross my new work mate who'd be transferring over after tea break. My new colleague was a proper chiselled hard-man looking bloke in his early forties. About five eight, lean and mean, dressed in denim jeans, shirt and jacket, sporting close cropped hair the days when your hair was considered short if your ears were visible, all the more intimidating due to the scar that ran prominently from his forehead, down the side of his nose and across his cheek.

He introduced himself in a proper Glaswegian taciturn growl. "They call me Billy tha' Beef. Ahm jest efter dane eighteen yairs in Peterheed."

If it was meant to impress me, he succeeded.

"Oh aye", says I "And, er ,,,"

"Kilt tha' wife wi' an axe".

I decided to leave it at that and didn't delve any further. He wasn't much of a conversationalist anyway.

I believe the real nutters go to Peterhead, but the rapists and peados are shared with Dumfries prison. Moved around for their protection. So you know if they've been in Peterhead Thay are mad / bad.

Any prison officers on here confirm this? Was told it years ago by one when I moved up here. Told not to allow my daughters into town unaccompanied.

Peterhead closed a couple of years ago. I was always led to believe that in itslatter days it housed the worst of Scotland's category A prisoners including violent sex offenders.

Auntie Google reckons the SAS were dispatched in 1987 to end the riot there, in what was known as "Scotland's gulag, a prison of no hope."

HMP Grampian as it is now called is bang right next door to the old Peterhead prison, which is now a prison museum.

Be worth a visit there after all.

I went to the old Crumlin prison in Belfast, one of the best visits I have ever done, very interesting. Walk along the tunnel to the courthouse was eerie.

A discussion on where forum members can meet ends up as a discussion on where the worst prisoners are.
Some sort of connection there? :p

Peterhead used to be the baddest and hardest then they moved them and filled it with sex criminals, by all accounts its a very stressful job either way.
