Yes he was lucky. He was a driver in the Royal Engineers.Bringing the Bailey bridges to the front to cross the rivers . The Germans changed all the signs around so he jumped out of his truck to ask an MP for directions when his truck was mortered. He woke up the following day in a ditch without a stitch of clothing on him and a wound in the stomach. The blast had striped him . he lost half his stomach but did rejoin his company and see the war out with them .
You must be very proud. My great grandad & great uncle are buried in northern France. Not so lucky? I'm not so sure, to live your life with such harrowing memories. I visited their graves a couple of years ago, very moving, very difficult to put into words. Without out heros where would we be now? But in many ways what a waste of life, so many headstones & most younger than 20 years of age
My Grandad always said "The only Heroes are dead ones" he lost alot of close friends . To live through the sights he saw must have been hell. I can only imagine how emotional your visit must have been.
Brought me to tears. Took my Dad(84) he was very emotional but very proud & solemn at the same time. Brought us even closer together if that's at all possible
Looks very interesting to me. I'm not sure yet if i'm going via Rotterdam or Zeebrugge but I'd be interested for sure.
Big sigh of relief today. My niece announced recently that she was getting married this year - great I thought, I'm really pleased for you but I just know that this will be the weekend of the GMU. Then she says it will be sometime in the Autumn - will that affect the International GMU or the DGR? Luckily it's going to be in October so I can relax!
Found this on the webb. http://www.bestbikingroads.com/motorcycle-roads/motorbike-rides-in-germany-/germany-__938.html You can zoom in on Bad Bertrich Area to see some of the best roads by Colour.
Very useful Wayne. There are some great roads here - the 259 down into Cochem and the 421 and 327 from Zell to Kastellaun I seem to remember were particularly enjoyable on my old T100! Losing my bearings on the way to Zell and riding past Spangdahlen airbase about to run out of petrol with 189 miles showing on the clock was not so much fun!
Hi all been a bit quite re the international trip. I've now sorted out my plans. I will be travelling to Folkstone on 9th September staying overnight and getting the train on the 10th. Heading for Brussels staying at the Hotel Des Colonies, Rue des Croisades 6 - 10, Sint-Joost-ten-Node, 1210 Brussels, Belgium. On the 11th will be travelling to [email protected] where we will stay until the Friday when I will head back to Brussels and then onto Calias for the train and home. Looking forward to hooking up with you all in Germany; ride safe. Wessa
It looks OK. I see on their website it says its "right next to the famous Mosel-Eifel-Klinik, Germany's leading specialist clinic for venous diseases." I'm not sure what that means exactly but I hope you feel better after your stay there !!!
