    Hi all,

So I put the TEC Desert exhaust on my Scrambler and I love it!!! What I don't love is when it continually burns holes in my trousers!!!!

Does anyone who lives near me (Godalming, Surrey) have any ability to weld/fabricate an extra bit on to the existing heat shield? It just needs to be a few inches longer (that's what she said) so my trousers don't touch the actual pipe and burn.

I have contacted various companies who advertise "no job too small" and it seems that's not entirely true and that this job is far to small!!

If no one can help, can anyone recommend someone who'd be able to help??? Or any other suggestions are welcome?

    Cheers,

    Matt

ps...see pic for where the exhaust has my trousers all over it!

Can you pack it off using washers Matt, it may help ?
The other option is to make a longer shield to suit your leg position.

Yeh I was thinking that making a longer one was the best option but I'm no where near able to do it!!!!!

A bit of a Kludge but can you buy the heat shield separate and fit a second one over the first to extend it by re-drilling the holes till you can get one made ??

    You can do it Matt.
Take the shield off and draw round it on a piece of cardboard.
Then extend the shape to the required length.
Get a piece of aluminium and draw round your cardboard template onto the aluminium.
Cut the shape using strong tin snips or a hacksaw.
File the form nice and smooth with no sharp edges.
Use your original shield as a template to drill the fixing holes.
Bend the form by hand over a wooden rolling pin or similar.
If you want the slots cutting in as your original, again use the original as a template and drill a series of holes top to bottom, then saw or file them through to give you a neat slot. (Do the slots before you bend it for ease)
If you don't fancy doing it yourself, take the shield to a small fabrication shop, they will probably make you an extended one for £10-£15
One pair of burnt trousers will more than pay for that.

    Thanks Mick!

You make it sound so easy!!! I’ve been trying to find a small fabricators that would do it but haven’t had any luck yet!!

You have tempted me into trying myself but who knows!

    Nothing to lose Matt.
It will be as good as you make it.

It could also be as :poop: as you make it.
But the satisfaction of making it yourself cannot be underestimated.
Go on try it, nothing to lose only a bit of your time.

What thickness of aluminium would you recommend?

TEC have been in touch today saying they’re happy to make one for me but are on holiday for a couple of weeks so in the meantime I’m going to try, just to see how badly it can actually go!!!

It’s nice knowing that once I balls it up TEC will step in and do it properly!

    Hi Matt,
Measure the thickness of the original shield.
Your extra length shield should be ideally made to the same thickness for heat dissipation and strength
You could however make the new shield out of thinner material which would be easier for you to cut and work with, then fasten it on top of the original to give it strength.
Good luck and enjoy the challenge.

    So here we go...

Be kind, I know it's VERY rough and ready but to be honest I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It's only a temporary measure until George at TEC get's back and can do a proper job but for now it'll do.

Haha as I said let's rip into it too much as I'm pretty sh*t at most things mechanical! Give me a guitar and I'll play whatever you want but give me a hammer and drill and I'm likely to loose a finger!

Still not convinced I'm going to put it on the bike but I had fun giving it a go so I guess that's what counts!

That's ok!! As you say it won't win any awards but it's practicality you're after and it looks like it'll do the job, well done. Bet you feel a little tinge of pride about it tho don't you??
