I was filing away the Bobbers V5 document last night and I noticed (for the very first time!) that it actually lists the bikes dB level. ....for the Bobber it's 97 dB @ 3,050 rpm ....so out of interest I checked out what the Thruxton 12's was, it was 93dB @ 3,375 rpm ....I am assuming that the testing for all DVLA data is carried out at the same distance from the sound meter so these figures are directly comparable which means, with the dB scale being logarithmic and not linear, that the Bobber is much louder than the Thruxton.........and my 'seat of the pants' testing agrees with that....it does sound much more 'boistrious' than the Thruxton. Out of interest, please will owners of other Triumph models share how many dB's their bikes are originally listed as producing in Factory Spec......... ( this means pre V & H, Predator etc etc mods) Now I know lots of us on the Forum love and favour that 'fruitier' exhaust note........I do suspect that the louder the exhaust the more we believe it enhances our 'gentleman bits'........So I was wondering if dB actually stands for di*kBooster!!!......lol........ Cheers, di*kydido
my thruxton says stationary 91db and 97db drive by at 3500 revs ,the tiger is 92 and 80 at 4650 revs so actually queiter. I'd like to know what the thrux gives with the preds on. Anyone got an HD, it would be interesting to see what those specs are.
Hi Dougie D, .....cheapest decibel meter on EBay.....£11.49........but it only goes up to 130dB's.......not sure if that'll be enough for your Hog!.... Cheers, dickydido
Tried googling db of straight through Vance & Hines on a harley, but could only see a figure with baffles in ..105 db ..did a bit more googling and it seems for every 10db its 10 times as loud..would that be right? I.E. 115db would be 10 times louder than 105db If that's the case does that mean for every 1db it is twice as loud
For a better understanding of dB comparisons go check out this site, the jump in sound intensity is very startling for just a few dB's more. But Dougie, I hope your Hog ain't pushing out more than 150dB as your head will explode!... .....always make me chuckle when I hear on some of the You Tube videos...'with my new (pick your own preferred brand of after market exhaust) I can now hear them even when I am wearing my ear plugs.....lovely!''.... https://www.chem.purdue.edu/chemsafety/Training/PPETrain/dblevels.htm Cheers, dickydido
The physics surrounding decibels needs studying to even half understand it. Exponential increase is why 1db makes a big difference in sound level. HSE website has some good basic guidance, otherwise you will 'boil your head' trying to understand it.
didn't realize it told you on the V5,although that will be for the standard pipe which is not too loud
it looks as if anything over 100db is seriously loud, i've had harleys for over 15 years( i'm begining to doubt that figure of 105db for the V&H exhaust with baffles) and it was only when i had a Ducati with termys on that i started getting Tinnitus..coincidence?? it wasn't as loud as the Harleys but maybe it's something to do with the tone of the exhaust??
In very simple terms for your safety. 85db for 8 hours would cause hearing damage. 100db for 15 minutes would cause hearing damage. Using ear plugs or ear defenders significantly reduces the risk dependant on the specification chosen.
My 2013 T100 has Dunstalls fitted and they are pretty loud, a nice sound but I'm certain that there is no real benefit and they get an Advisory on the MoT. Then again, so does my Sportster..
