Hi all hoping someone can help me out with my problem. my 2007 d675 is having regulator/rectifier wire heating problems.Once the R/R heats up it stops charging the battery and the wires are getting as hot as 90 degrees C causing the insulating plastic to melt. Could this problem be that the R/R is not earthed properly?. I have moved it from behind the motor to by the pillion footpegs for move airflow hoping it would stay cooler.Has anyone heard anything about after market R/R the Hot Shot series 10-007H. Any help would be appreciated
Hi Richard, welcome aboard the forum, sorry that I can't shed any light on your problem but I'm sure our more tech minded members will be along shortly with sound advice, they're a very helpful bunch.
It is a common feature of electrical windings (ignition coils/pick up coils stator windings etc) that over time a wire break and only separates fully when the winding expands through heat. So, your problem may not be voltage regulation (spike prevention) or rectification (AC to DC) but the stator itself.....and maybe that is what you mean. In any event, moving the reg/rec won’t impact a duff stator. There are a few YouTube videos to check things out. Start here? A photo of what is melting would aid detectives on the other side of the planet!
Hi Richard, and welcome in I can't comment on your problem I'm afraid but if you post a thread on your relevant bike section there may be some people in there that may not see this one that could help you out. There is a lot of knowledge here and hopefully all the advice you need will be forthcoming. Good luck
First check out the video @Callumity posted and let us know what results you get. When you moved the Reg/Rec :- Did you also move the mounting bracket ? Is the Reg / Rec mounted to a clean surface on the bracket ? Does the Reg/Rec have a good clean earth to the frame ? Did you check/clean the electrical connections / plugs to the Reg/Rec From the Alternator and out to the battery ?
Welcome aboard Richard. Have you checked to see if there was ever a recall on your reg/rec? PM me have the last six digits of your vin number and I can check for you.
Thanks for the advice. I have changed the stator and cover for new ones and got 1 ride out of it before the same thing happened again.so unless I got a dodgy startor I'm ruling the windings out.
Hi yes I did all the things you mentioned. The stator is giving me all the right numbers when checking pin to pin. Even changed the stator and cover for new ones. Still same problem
Thanks from Scotland (not Yard!) Read this carefully https://www.wemoto.com/info/regulator_rectifier Your reg/rec is clearly fried with heat but you need to check a few things to avoid killing its replacement. They certainly benefit from sitting in a clear air flow but you need to check the main power connections as described. Cheap replacements (Chinese!) generally prove short lived because of limited heat cycle life. If Oz cannot supply try: https://www.squaredeals-ltd.co.uk/r...ket-part-for-triumph-applications-20346-p.asp
Hi Richard and welcome, my first thoughts are if the Rec/ reg unit gets hot without a load ie battery or bike drain, What wires are melting ? Output or input side ? Is there excessive load on one of the outputs ? Try isolating all but essential outputs ie ignition unit and battery only. A cold resistance check (dead)on the bike wiring to check for shorts, On individual outputs or removing individual fuses to find out if excessive load removed! Also selection of quality unit imperative. Food for thought, Do not rush or make hasty decisions. All the best Jeff
Thanks Jeff. Wires from stator stay cool when not plugged into R/R but obviously battery is not being charged like this. Don't think there are any dead shorts that I can find. All the output figures are where they are supposed to be.
Hi Richard, maybe quality of unit ? Put battery on an optimiser which tests condition, not holding charge = drawing current all the time etc. Let us all know outcome Regards Jeff
