DAB radio, or BAD radio? We have dab, found it to give lots more choice, but signal can be hit & miss depending on where the signal comes from, if it comes from Glasgow its crap, weak and keeps having breaks in transmittion, but from Irvine transmitter o.k., people who travel distances tell me its crap as you loose the signals, no better than AM. Now its been announced that F.M. is not going to be discontinued. Just trying out BBC6, got so sick of the stupid adverts on local/commercial radio. Will also be trying BBC4 Extra soon.
... and for discerning music lovers under 30 too ... well my son has it on most of the day when at home. A truly eclectic range of music. Some very intelligent and knowledgeable current and former performers as show presenters, such as Guy Garvey (Elbow), Cerys Mathews (Catatonia), Tom Robinson (TRB), Marc Riley (Fall), Bob Dylan, Iggi Pop., Bruce Dickinson and others. And for 4Extra don't forget Round The Horne, and if not already mentioned, The Goons.
The problems with DAB have been known for a while. Network coverage is poor to non existent in some areas. They have already on at least once occasion failed to make the date they set to discontinue the FM and AM service. Frankly they need to improve the coverage first.
Yeah I borrowed a neighbours one to check for reception before buying. Not so much of a problem in Englandshire cos there are 65 million people down there, so the reception will be rolled out first...as usual.
Also you must re-tune a new DAB radio when you get it to your local(ish) transmitters, I didn't know this and had crap reception for over a year! BBC have decided to continue am/fm and not shut it down, now the government need to drop the idea too, it was going to make concesions to allow community radio stations to continue now they have no worries it seems. DAB seems like broad band, good in most places and feck the rest, tough luck!
BBC were going to axe 6Music as a money saver until a successful campaign was launched to save it. The campaign website carried a sample letter for supporters to use to send to their MP and BBC Governors. I wrote that letter.
Radio 2 Monday nights 7-8pm The Blues show with Paul Jones (from Manfred Mann fame) is worth listening too
Who the fuck gave too many the rights to permanent employment, Chris Evans, Ken Bruce, Weasel faced Jeremy Vine, Steve Wright, Simon Mayo etc. They got rid of Jimmy Young to put Weasel face in, BIG mistake getting rid of 1 with talent for 1 with none!
It's not so clever all over mate. They say 97.5% UK coverage now that the 'kissing cousins' of North Norfolk have been included in. A factor is the UK were early adopters and were already too far down the DAB roll out to then roll it back when the superior DAB+ was launched elsewhere.
There is supposed to be a new station coming on air with loads of old (being the operative word!) dj's from the ships era like DLT, Emperor Rosko (the best) and more, but not heard or seen any more about it for a while, hope the project has not been binned!
