    Hello Wise People.

Hoping to shake on a 2004/5 790 Bonny this Friday and bike has a replaced engine. Have spoken to current owner and all seems totally legit (V5 engine number updated) but would like to track down history of donor bike/engine if poss. Will only have engine number and no VIN or REG number so in theory should be doable but can only find pre Hinckley engine number references online. Am told engine is same year and lower mileage so all seems good - but y'know - be splendid to know for sure if poss. Anyone know sites to look up details from engine number only?

Many Thanks in anticipation - will now spend many hours reading old threads!! bimble :)

Many hours of searching has yielded no possible way of checking whether an engine number is legit - much blurb about how to tell if number has been changed but absolutely zero resouces for how to check any number. Would like to verify at least the year of engine if nothing else - apparently impossible!! Any checking requires VIN or REG number. "shrug"

Any idea why it was changed, who did the work and when? Would expect some form of paperwork, even if it's only the invoice for the replacement engine.....

    Have you tried contacting Triumph?

Yes Triumph should be able to say the year of the engine at least or the TOMCC. But look at the engine number on the bike if its not been messed with and the engine sounds good i don't see a problem. But do get where you are coming from an engine change you would think would have a receipt unless an owner replaced it himself or herself. Lots of reasons for a change from seizing the bike own lump to many failings in the engine.
