That statistic doesn't mean that less people die, it just means that in the UK they are stabbed (or other) rather than shot. It is a percentage of murders that are gun related being 3%, the other 97% of murders still happened and people still died. But I agree that this is a foolish discussion, as murder is evil regardless of the tool used.
Those numbers obviously paint a picture but it would be better, at least in my mind, and more representative if it was stated as a percentage against the countries population. Naturally USA is going to have the most probability of incidents as it has the largest population a bit like comparing parking tickets issued or anything else.
