When I'm working on the front of the bike, cleaning or general fettling, I find it's always a curse trying to raise the front wheel off the deck. At the moment I use a car jack and wood slats, but that is cumbersome and definitely unsteady. Does anybody have a suggestion for something better and of course , cost effective.

Car jack and a suitable piece of wood works for me! Just make sure it is as solid as possible. I have a front axle stand as well if I feel so inclined, and even a choice of scissor jack or bottle jack.
    I know ..... smartarse!

I use a stand that lifts under the bottom yoke, with a rear stand very stable.

Here is the one I use. The upper part fits between the mudguard and fairing and is held in place y an attached pin which slides into the steering stem. Much more stable than the under fork leg ones and lets you remove the forks whilst lifted.
