Building the clutch on a T90 with 500cc barrels and have put the thrust bearing on the T1386 with the tangs facing gearbox and bearing surface facing the clutch. Parts books seem to show the hub, the bearing rollers and then the thrust bearing ie the bearing is managing a load going into the clutch?

the clutch assy however is held tight on the tapered shaft by the nut so bit confused? 1963 parts book doesnt show the thrust bearing by the way?

The thrust washer fits over/around the roller bearings (the roller bearings run on the race in the clutch basket) with the tangs facing the gearbox as you've said.
The bronze coloured side faces the clutch basket.
The parts catalogue doesn't show it very well but the later catalogues are slightly better
