I could use some help finding stiffer rear suspension and a more comfortable seat for my 2018 Speedmaster.
Welcome Ned. I know I'm stating the obvious here... I assume you've tried increasing the preload on the rear suspension? I'm 110kg (240lb) and the standard solo setting is too soft for me so have it on a middle setting. If I forget and leave it on max after taking a pillion, I notice cornering is even nicer but those potholes jar a bit too much so end up going back to a middle setting. As to the seat; when I bought mine I played safe an got Triumph's 'comfort' seat option, and find I can comfortably ride all day with that. I know a lot of people find the standard seat OK so can't remember seeing any comments or reviewers talking about seeking alternatives. However, the pillion seat is another matter, it's rather poor, even the 'comfort' version, and people have tried modifying it or doing their own fabrication to fit seats for other bikes.
I live in Illinois (no winter riding) and put 8000 miles on it in the first 6 months. 90+% on road trips. I weigh 260 + another 50 pounds of gear over back wheel. I bottom out a lot. Mono shock is at Max. Have not been able to find anything aftermarket. My problem with saddle is all tail bone issues. Tried air pad, beads, folded cloth, everything I could think of. One of the only things that gives relief is to straighten my legs and sit on the passenger seat for awhile. I assume I am pretty strange looking when I do that. (I am 6'3")
Welcome to the Asylum you should fit right in. Too keep the inmates happy we will need photos. Tucker
Hi and welcome to the forum, Ned. At 110kg I set preload at 3 and find it good with the Triumph comfort seat. Looking at using the original for pillion use. Hargon have one for Bobber but no preload
Thanks Dartplayer. I looked up Hargon monoshocks and their listing only went up to 2010. How do I find something that will fit my 2018 SM. I am assuming it would be the same shock as the Bobber. Correct me if I am wrong on that point.
Hi Ned, main difference between Bobber and Speedy is the preload (for pillion). Checking the Mathis Bobber shock it had preload adjustments. https://bellacorse.com/shop/bcc334/ As with most shocks, it pays to have them Setup for your weight and expected load (pillion/luggage).
Thanks a lot. This sound like a possible fix. I am going to talk to them about whether this can solve my problem.
Corbin now makes a seat for the new SM. I have Corbin on my old SM and my America. Very pleased with them.
I just lent my Speedmaster to Corbin. They are using it to make a solo seat for the SM. Should be ready in a couple of weeks. I tried the comfort seat but I didn't see a whole lot of difference. Planning a 5,000 trip on the SM so REALLY need a good seat. I'll keep everyone updated.
