hi all! Yet another problem with Tracey!
Went out in her today to get some coolant. About 20 miles from home I couldn't reach my gear lever, looked down and the nut on the clamp at the top had come off and the clamp had come away, stuck in 5th I managed to get home, thank god for torquey bikes. Anyway got home and put the clamp back on and with a bit of fiddling managed to get her into neutral. Not got a bolt for it yet but having problems going through the gears, i.e. Can do 1st to 3rd but that's it! Anything I should be doing? The linkage clamp is not slipping it just won't change up!!

@DD that diagram appears to be from the engine side so the lever 5 needs to be pointing to 4 oclock approx. ( 90 degrees to the rod ).

Is the gear lever returning to center after selecting the gear ?

If the above doesn't work ...... I would look at 5 and mentally mark the extremes of movement up and down and set the lever to the center of that range and retest with it clamped up tight .

I agree with DD and Oldyam, it must be something to do with the orientation of the lever on the splined shaft.
If you have access to a similar bike you may be able to 'copy' the lever position, otherwise it will have to be trial and error until you find the exact orientation to enable all gears to be found.

Not sure about your bike or Triumphs in general but a lot of bikes have two centre punch marks....one on the linkage...the part where the bolt is missing....and one on the shaft where the linkage goes on the splines
Line these up (if they're there) and that should be the standard setting for your bike :)
I wouldn't ride it with out the bolt though as you could shear the splines off the linkage or worse the shaft splines :(

Suggestion? Hey you guys if anyone has the same bike out there post some close up photos, at least then he will be within a couple of splines either way

Thanks I will look at punch marks etc tomorrow when it's light. @Dozers Dad part number 5 is splined fits on the splined rod coming out of the casing part number 6 crimps it down.

This is the full diagram, the assembly below the gear lever, in the diagram, is the internal gear selector that part 5 attaches to

I would also advise clicking the gearbox into neutral with the linkage unattached and start with your spline positioning from neutral to ensure all gears can be engaged, then re-attach the linkage.

PS.... Pls stay away from main dealers. Their "technicians" couldn't find their own arse with both hands in a brightly lit room!! o_O[/QUOTE]
Unfortunately he's an ex triumph mechanic working for himself recommended by a few other triumph owners, seems I can't win!!

Ok it's sorted, I should have learnt not to bother with google and stories of broken gear boxes etc!! There was a punch mark which you line up with the gap in the lever! All sorted!!
Seemingly it's a common occurrence these things shaking loose and the fact it's screwed in from the bottom doesn't help, so to make doubly sure it doesn't happen again.....,

    Thanks for all your help!!

Blob of weld my arse :joy:do the job right old Crispey.

Drill through the actuating arm where the splined shaft goes through.
Place actuating arm on shaft and using the newly drilled holes as a template drill the shaft and hammer in a roll pin.
Even if the bolt comes out the arm won't come off, ever :bomb:

Only joking don't do it ;):):):)

Nylon nut and star washer would be good, plus a
blob of paint for a regular quick visual check.
