I am looking for some hand guards to fit the 2023 Speed Twin 900. I tried the Oxford product and while they are good I couldn't fit them into the bar end as the ST has Triumph fitted heated grips - which seems to prevent the Oxford ones from fitting. Has anyone had any success sourcing any handguards that will fit the ST? Thanks.
I did but I may have another look. The problem I had with the Oxford ones was the fitting to the existing Triumph Heated Grips - see below. Not sure the same issue will occur with the BB products. BB are good but pricey.
To fit them relied on inserting a locking flange into the existing grips using a specific bolt. They do not clamp round the bar end nor the handlebars. The Triumph stock heated grips fitted to the bike prevented this fitting being used and therefore I had to return the Oxford handguards. This was a pity as I liked the Oxford design. With hindsight I wouldn't have fitted the heated grips and stuck with heated gloves and the Oxford handguards. Although the heated grips are nice, the fingers do get cold - especially when at speed on the motorway. Hence the option to fit guards to deflect wind and rain.
I have read the fitting instructions for the heated grips ( part number A9631556 - downloaded from www.triumphinstructions.com ). It shows the ends of the heated grips as being open, in order to allow the standard "bar-end finishers" to be refitted. The bar-ends are held by a bolt that screws into a boss inside the handlebars, so you can't fit an expanding mount for any handguards or bar-end weights or mirrors, even if you don't have heated grips, because the internal boss is in the way. As mentioned in the video posted above, and in this thread - www.thetriumphforum.com/threads/street-scrambler-barkbusters-handguards.21820/ - you should be able to use the Triumph factory bolt, or a longer one if necessary, to hold the handguard mounting into the end of the handlebars. Note that the Street Scrambler, like the Speed Twin 1200, has fatbars - 28.5mm outer diameter in the centre and 22mm at the ends. I assume that the Speed Twin 900 is the same? Also in that thread is a pic of a Street Scrambler fitted with Tiger 900 handguards, but I'm sure Triumph put a high price on them. If you just want wind protection, and don't need the lever guards provided by, for example, Barkbusters, perhaps you can find some handguards that clamp around the handlebars inboard of the switchgear.
Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Yes I did think of using the existing factory bolt however removing the in place bolt and locking mechanism on the Oxford guard bracket was too difficult and therefore couldn't be replaced. I agree finding a solution that clamps around the bar end OR some other part of the handlebar is probably the answer and it is possible that BB provide such a solution - but they are pricey. Another option has emerged, a friend has a 3D printer and has found a design to download off the web. It clamps around the bar end. It may actually work. I wasn't looking for something permanent - just to fit in the winter months for the occasional ride. The 3d print jobs would be cheap and easily replaceable when or if broken.
I understand the importance of finding the right hand guards. There are many stores with a range of hand guards that should fit the Speed Twin 900, including a few that are designed specifically to work with heated grips.
