    Hey there!

I already read the "If your bike wont start try this" thread but I am not sure if my case applies to a problem described there.

My 1996 Thunderbird randomly wont start after I rode for 1-3hrs. Battery is OK and if I put the bike in second gear and push I can get it to start. The mechanic already replace the solenoid, so this shouldn't be the problem (or maybe he replaced it with and old faulty one)? When I push the start button I hear the click of the solenoid so it should work I guess?

Can this problem be caused by heat? One day after the solenoid was replaced I had the same problem but after not using the bike for 3-4 days, I could start it again with no problem.

Should I replace the pickup coil? Are there any other issues I (or the mechanic) can look at?

    Thanks and cheerio!

@adonatsch I had the same problem a few years ago. It would conk out after about 45 mins of riding, leave it a few hours and it would start again 1st time. Then you'd go for a ride, and the problem would come back. I replaced the ignition pick up coil, and it's been perfect ever since. Hope you get it sorted soon. Keep us posted on your progress.

Hey there! Thank you so much for your reply!

The bike was in the garage for more than a day, but wont turn on. So I am assuming that everything is cooled down. Do you still think, it could be the ignition pickup coil?

Also, I'm not super sure if I translated ignition pickup coil right when searching for parts (language :)) Is it this: https://www.triumphworld.de/product_info.php?products_id=127602&language=en

    Cheers

    @adonatsch
No, the part you need is, the following
Ignition System 111989 Part no 5.
It's almost at the bottom of the page. I'm on my mobile at the moment, and I'm not too good at giving exact locations. But I'm sure if you go on that website and put in the details above I'm sure you'll find it. I'm no mechanic, so someone else might come along to confirm the part number. Also I can't zoom in on the picture. Hope this will help you out. Keep us posted :)

    Heya @Bikerman !

I brought the bike to the mechanic and it has been several weeks but they still couldnt figure out the issue.. Just randomly wont start after engine is hot. So because of your input, I asked if the ignition pick up coil you mentioned could be the problem. The mechanic then said it cant be, because otherwise you wouldn't be able to bump start it (which you can). Is he right?

I'm no mechanic, but that seems odd. If its a hot engine,
( when the problem is there) then no, but if it's not then I can't see why it couldn't be bumb started. Maybe someone with greater knowledge would be able to give you a definative answer one way or another.

    Hey @Bikerman

Yeah, when the problem occurs (hot engine) you can bump start it. So if I understood you correctly, you are also of the opinion that it shouldn't be the pick up coil, right? Maybe I should look into the three ignition coils..

When I had my problem, I would ride for about 25 Min's or so, and then the bike would cough and splutter as if it were running out of fuel, and then it just died, It would not start at all. If however, I gave it a good 45 min's or so to cool down, it would start up again as if there was no problem at all, and then when the engine got hot again, the problem came back. The ignition pick up coil was changed for a new one, and it's been fine ever since. I did not change the 3 coils.

Don't know if you've sorted it yet but I think it's the starter.. By bump starting it you're bypassing the starter...
