Thursday evening is the weekly bike meet at The Whistle Stop Cafe at the station in Whitby. Weather was spot on for a good ride over the moors with the return along the coast via Sandsend. It also coincided with a world record attempt to gather together the largest number of people dressed as vampires (I only found this out later - it's not unusual to see Goths or vampires strolling around Whitby to be fair) This was to commemorate to the day the 125th anniversary of the publication of Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula". To celebrate the occasion I decided to climb the 199 steps up to the abbey. St Marys church, founded in 1100 but the interior fittings are Georgian, including a galleried first floor and rare box pews. The graveyard is used as a setting in the Dracula novel - you can see why The ruined abbey, not the best picture but access was limited due to gathering vampires Return journey via the donkey path adjacent to the steps - a sign at the top does advise that it is unsuitable for motor vehicles Yes it is that steep
Great photos of a very interesting place, Steve! I love the photo of the sweeping view of the town that you (I'm assuming) took from the top of those steep steps. But I do find that graveyard quite creepy and can definitely see why it's used as a setting in Dracula.
Where are the cooked breakfasts that you used to show us ? Have you gone all healthy muesli and salads in your er ahem old age ?
I'll see what I can do Andy. Had one yesterday in Saltburn but ate it before I thought to take a picture
