Tiger Explorer Tiger 900 Wind Issues ... Help !

New rider with probably a very new rider style question ...

After riding my Trident 660 for the past 12 months I decided it was time for an upgrade to a bigger bike. I want something that is better suited for touring and longer day trips.

I was excited to test ride the Tiger 900 Rally Pro yesterday. The bike felt great In every way, except someone appeared to have inserted a leaf blower into my helmet and turned it on. The noise was deafening, even with ear plugs. Add to that the pummelling my shoulder were taking, from the wind, and I was left quite disappointed.

I have done some research and watched lots of videos about wind buffering and vibrations, however I am not convinced that's the same issue as I was having. My helmet wasn't vibrating as such, it was just very noisy.

So, would a wider screen likely ease the problem or should I be looking at a different bike?

I am 6'1", so tall, but hardly a man giant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome - this is a common problem with the later Tigers. If you think the 900 is bad you should try the 800!
I'm afraid the only answer is to bite the bullet and buy a replacement screen. There is loads of information on here and on the internet about this.
Best screen is a Madstad but they are not cheap (although can be had on ebay). You could also explore fitting a wind deflector on top of the screen - an effective and cheaper option. Go "Chinese cheap" on ebay first and if you like it maybe upgrade to a better quality one.

 

It seems to vary between riders and kit. I have an 850 after owning a Street Twin. On my test ride (900GT) I noticed wind on my shoulders, but not the sound that you are getting, I have an Arai Axces II. The 850 doesn't come with hand guards so I fitted Barkbusters with Jet plastics and I hardly notice the wind on my shoulders now. I am not sure if it is just perception or if the handguards make a difference. I am getting used to having a screen and aware of the way the calm air bubble can get pushed around by gusts etc. I find it is much more tiring on an upright naked bike with the air pressure always there than the odd buffet from the calm bubble getting pushed away from me.

Wind noise and buffeting really seems to vary from person to person. I found the stock screen on the 850 & 900 to be OK, but I'm really sensitive to wind noise. The Givi 6415 ST is brilliant, in my opinion. I had two different size Madstad's on my V-Strom 650 and even with the up and down and angle adjustments, it was never as good as the Givi on the new Tiger. So, that would be my advice.

I'm just under 6'/ 182 cm with a 32" inseam. Shoei Neotec II with ear plugs. I also find that a neck tube, even a light weight one, that can snug up around the bottom of the helmet, can reduce noise inside the helmet.

One other thing you may notice is that with a bigger screen you get more reflected engine noise; a curious but logical result of a convex reflector in front of you.

 

I guess, being new to biking, I naively thought I would get on a bike with a screen and there would be no wind on my chest and the noise in my helmet would just be the same as my naked bike ... I was clearly wrong.

The Givi ST looks huge. It remind me of those delivery scooters abroad. As much as I would like that sort of protection, I dont think I could use that screen. I did look at the standard S one, which seems like it might be Wirth a try. No taller but the width might help with the wind turbulence on my shoulders.

 

I guess it is big, but it works. I've spent a pile of money on clear plastic for various motorcycles and scooters, and its depressing. I'm hugely happy with the Givi, though it may not be quite what you're after. BTW, the spoiler on the stock screen in this photo helps some, but still no comparison.

Everybody's, tolerances are different and fair enough, it has to work for you visually as well as functionally.

 

I take your point. I guess it might be different if I actually rode one with the Givi screen on. Its probably going to be a trial and error things until I find something I like. I will probably test ride an Africa Twin for comparisons sake but I did love the feel of the Tiger

The screen is absolutely great, with awesome protection and much less noise, but the mounting is not ideal
First one cracked after one ride, it got replaced under warranty.
Second one is holding ok, but I needed to mcgiver the mounting points and it does not look really clean
Another problem is that the bigger screen puts a lot of stress on the lower mount, it broke twice, I have reinforced it with a piece of metal and epoxy, I do believe this will be a problem with any bigger screen, not just the one from calsci

 

My word, that sounds like allot of effort. What size did you go for as I think they do a few

 

A lot of the Noise experienced behind a screen is related to quite a few relationships .
Height and width :- higher and wider the screen the further back the 'Spoiled' air (turbulence).
Height and width :- of the rider this time !! The taller the rider ... The more likely that your head is going to be exposed to this concentration of spoiler (turbulence) and of course a wider stance/body will project into side air spill.
Helmet size/shape/insulation will be probably the biggest decider on how much the noise of the wind flow OFF the screen will Annoy or affect your comfort !

Well I have just put a deposit down on a new 900 Rally Pro. Should arrive next month. I guess it will be trial and error on the windscreen front.

Yes, that one is the wider Madstad screen, which is the same height as the original so I added the deflector. This does make a significant difference as I can ride along with the helmet visor open.

 

Congrats on the new purchase. So to combat the wind all I had to do was add the Puig wind deflectors. They stick out a tad bit further and i honestly get almost no wind. I’m 6’2 if that helps. I also have a nice shoei helmet with a chin guard to prevent air as well. My shoulders and chest are good now.

The only issue is I can only find it on pyramid plastics which is in the UK and I paid damn near more shipping than I did for the actual deflector.

Lots of wind deflectors available. Not pricey, ajustables, can be removed.

 

Hi, Ive just got the tiger 660? after naked bikes I thought the screen would be quiet - I,m too tall to get head behind screen ( even on high setting) and on low screen setting it is quieter but not much however if i raise my head around 6" to full stretch it is noticeably quieter - I think I will have to replace the screen once available
