At present our union are still negotiating this year's pay offer - which is currently a very generous pay freeze the same as last year. Any offer we can hope to gain is likely to be below inflation as it has been for the last few years, so, in effect a pay cut again in real terms. We're paid little enough for what can be a stressful job (although I love it) with a lot of responsibility and like many others have seen workload increase with Covid. It is terrible for morale.
@Mrs Visor … even the one significant pay rise the nhs had in the last 12 years was a BS unfair one… the people with expertise, keeping the place running got feck all… it’s been effectively a pay cut after pay cut when you factor in the last decade.
There are unfortunately a lot of us in the same boat - those who work to protect / support the public in various ways mainly!!
How right you are. 30 years Fire Service. I’ve been out coming up 7 years and I’ve had better pay rises every year since retiring than the people still doing the job. Outrageous, absolutely outrageous. How we redress the balance I really do not know. “Thank you for your service” yeah right.
Well I for one think that all our emergency services are briliant, and the government doesn't show them all the respect that they so rightly deserve, or a proper amount of money that should reflect their gratitude for the work that they all do. So as a normal (Debatable I know) member of the British public, cheers for all you have done for people in the past.
I just thought, the MPs could accept a nice, stirring round of applause instead of the pay rise… I’ll happily stand outside my house and bang some pots and pans for a minute if it means they reject the money.
It’s sad how people cling on desperately… I’ve admired Dolly’s fun loving presentation, quick wit, song writing talents and social give-back. So when I heard she was releasing a novel, I thought I’ll watch the press release and see what the deal is… Now I know she’s getting older and her natural good looks would be weathered by the passing of the years, but I wasn’t prepared for the lengths she has gone to try and hold onto something that isn’t there anymore. Plastic surgery goes too far https://www.bbc.com/news/av/entertainment-arts-60609363
It's easy for us to criticise but if that's what she wants then I think we should accept it. Joanna Lumley is in the same boat. I've never been pretty so I can just get old, grow wrinkles and get uglier, I don't care. It must be hard for really pretty women to lose their looks, Most on here will never know what it's like. You ugly gits.
When I worked at Gatwick, I met Dolly Parton. She was really nice, and not a bit of " Oh look everybody I'm a star" about her. Ronnie Corbitt however was a major short arse Wanker of the highest order.
I agree that I’ll never know the need personally, I just think that people might have learned already from the mistakes of others…
I think this is a very fair comment. I’d add that (western) society’s expectations of women in general to remain ‘young looking’ is unreasonable. Everyone has a right to do what want with their own body without judgement, either way.
And in show business it's even worse so the temptation to have cosmetic surgery to maintain/increase your star status/employability must be huge and once on that path there's no way back.
Very true but the flip side is these people are role models to lots of young girls, and boys who are easily influenced. They think this is the norm. I've seen young women probably still in their 20's with plastic flappy fish lips. Disgraceful!
