After yesterday, had a bit of cleaning to do, a before and after...

    1.jpg

Then as a start to a service I dropped the oil out the engine.

To make sure there are no expensive accidents in a week or so when service is done I put the keys in an envelope... :)

    3.jpg

As part of the order I did for service parts I got a more practical oil filler cap.

    2.jpg

Bike is now in garage (aka the conservatory, aka Mrs Mouse's greenhouse) ready to start disassembly for checking valve clearances, but that's for tomorrow...

Service isn't actually due until 3,000 more miles but as my annual mileage equals the service interval (10k), I normally end up doing it in the middle of summer. better to do it now when the weathers crap rather than in the middle of prime riding season.

Thanks, for a genuine Triumph item (part A9610241) its not too expensive either at £16.70. And with those knurled edges probably easy to get off by hand, and there's an hex hole for if it gets stuck. Much better than trying to get a bit of metal into the 'coin' slot on the original item and using an adjustable spanner to try and turn it without scraping your knuckles on the engine cooling fins :(

PS I think the cap also comes in a black anodised finish for those that are that way inclined.

I didn’t see anything that caught my eye whilst out on my run.
I’m thinking about moving the Thruxton on based on my arthritis, which is was causing me more problems towards the end of the season last year. I’m thinking that it is likely to be more of an issue this coming season. I don’t want the bike just sitting in the garage, it needs to be ridden. The tiger is coming up three years old and whilst that is not a real problem, a change is always fun. To be honest I think the Thruxton will go and unless I can find a good replacement the tiger will stay.

I serviced my old Street Scrambler about 2k short of the service interval, primarily to quieten the tappets down a bit. Nothing wrong with an underdue service. :)

I understand about the Thruxton, @Wessa. For me, even the Speed Triple's position is easier on my old(er) body parts than was my Thruxton. I'm sure you'll be sorry to see it go, though, as was I.

I am glad to know you'll keep that Tiger unless / until you find a replacement that really grabs you. I'm hoping that it's still a Triumph or, even if it's not, that you'll remain a part of the forum community. :)

I always seem to find myself gravitating towards any late model Speedmasters that end up on the showroom floor of our local dealership. I'm not quite sure why but I just really like the styling and the seating position when I sit on them even though I've never ridden one.

Not really bothered about the T120, a pretty bike as it is. And already had a speedmaster so not going back to one lol

Hi @Sandi I popped into my local Triumph dealer last summer to buy a ventilated summer jacket. The first bike I saw entering the shop was a 12 month old Speedmaster for sale. Even though I had never considered that style of bike I fell in love with it. It was fully specced up with goodies too and very low mileage. My wife was with me and liked the bike more than me. She gave her blessing and the deal was struck. I didn't even have a test ride.
The bike still stirs my soul every time I go into my garage. Its the first bike I've had for a long time where I can't resist a backward glance every time I park up.

Day two of servicing. Took me an hour to get petrol tank off because I couldn't work out how the wiring connectors came apart, plus trying to push in the clip on the fuel hose without the pliers that Amazon were meant to deliver yesterday. Then another two hours dismantling enough stuff to get cam cover off. Neither Haynes manual nor Triumph service manual quite had all the steps, and neither seemed to realise there's a wiring harness and holder in the way to get at the ignition coil mounting screws. Finally I got to the stage where I could measure the valve clearances, good job I've got tiny eyes to see those tiny clearances...

    1.jpg

Exhaust clearances were fine, inlet clearance on one side were just under spec, and on other side only just over. So plan on adjusting both. Put in another order with Fowlers, which unfortunately doesn't have much of the shim sizes in stock, so may have to try again, or elsewhere. At least the order will include alternator gasket and other bits I need for checking timing, so that's something I'll should be able to do over weekend.

Those fuel hose clips can be a right bu@@er to undo. Not the best design, I don't think...

Amazon just delivered the pliers I needed this morning, they seem to fit well to press in the buttons on either side of the connector (I tried it on the already disconnected hose). At least I have them for next time.

I used these on the SS....
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-9...YABUSA-/274400574354?var=&hash=item3fe38c7b92

I already had some circlip pliers with changeable jaws so I made some for the fuel hose clip out of some very stiff wire.
Just put the bike in top, with the plugs out and turn the engine over with the rear wheel. Measure each valve clearance between the base circle of the cam and the shim (when the lobe of the cam is pointing away from the valve). Thats how I do mine, no need to bother removing engine covers etc.

Yes, there's just something about a Speedmaster. :) Mr. Sandi and I were looking at the 2022 on the Triumph website and he really likes it, too. It's great that your Speedmaster still stirs your soul when you see it in the garage and glance back at it when you park it. That says a lot. :) Is there a photo of your bike on the forum that you can point me to? Or would you consider posting one here?

Sadly no photos of bike Sandy. I will endeavour to put that right when out and about somewhere scenic. Just for info it's the same colour as brown mouses, black & white.
