    DU1101 is a 63 model year bike and was the only frame to have the number on the headstock as the 64 model year bike had the numbers stamped lower down on the down tube part of the casting, also 63 frame should have different foot rests but yours has folding pegs from a later C model. Although the numbers on the cases look good they are copies/restamped as the cases you have are one year only production cases for the 1969 model year as are all the other parts on the bike, sounds like its had a great past but the simple fact is its its not 8k when you can by a rare fully restored C as above for 8 or less. Hopefully you can buy it for 2-3k and have some fun with it :)

    What does it mean to be restamped/copies and how can you tell?

    Because the engine in your bike is a one year only made casing, on my friends bike you can see the gearbox filler plug behind the barrels as early bikes had that and your 69 model year engine does not have.

    Here is my 69 and you can see all the parts on my bike are the same as your bike except the frame :)

    Sorry for being so green but I don't understand the restamp exactly if you could explain. I'm trying to sort how I would explain all this simply to the guys wife who knows nothing about bikes.

    Sorry, either the owner managed to get some new cases and then stamped them with the 63 number or someone has erased the original numbers and restamped them, hope that makes it clearer :)

    Super appreciate all the prompt and informative info all. I use alot of forums and it shows you got a great bunch here. I made an offer and it seems we're too far apart. She's including apx. 2000 worth of British metric tools and various spare parts but I don't think we're going to make a deal. Also frustrating that she's still attempting to sell the bike as a numbers matching 63 Bonnie. Not cool. Wasn't meant to be I guess.

    I guess it will be a big disappointment - perhaps to you both - that it won't be heading to your garage, but, if I were you, I'd see it as 'dodging a bullet'! The info @darkman has provided about its 'real world' value is by far the most realistic view. I can see the owner's point of view and I can see that it MIGHT have been an exciting, rideable prospect for you but the reality is that it's not, in fact, "the sum of its parts"!

    I think if I were in your shoes, I would be looking to find out more information about that '69 model at $5.5k that darkman posted. That looks rideable and 'keepable'.

    Welcome to the family. Did you look at the spares and tools as they to are worth money and on a real lucky day you might find the original cases or bottom half. Make an offer considering the whole package and tell her to get back to you if things change. Never know.

    And realistically worth perhaps a few hundred dollars at most. Check Ebay for true values of similar kit brand new.

    Just the sort of machine I like - a bitsa. And agreed, it's not worth anywhere near the asking price, even with the tools. But it's still very nice.

    What's up guys... I'M BACK! :) Months later this bike has come back into my path with a MUCH lower price tag and I'm traveling a couple hours on Wednesday to look at it. The price is right and I'd be getting a clear title, spare parts and all the British metric parts she has. The parts and tool haul sounds substantial. So, I wanted to revisit this thread. She also said the bike was bored out (by her British specific mechanic husband) to 750cc. I was also told about the level of mechanic he was by some peers. Again this would be my first Triumph so any info on what to look for when the bike is in front of me etc. would be appreciated. Also keep in mind I love the bike for what it is and am not concerned with it being 'correct' or original. I appreciate what he did and like the bike as is. It is not running but has been stored in her heated shop, engine not froze and was apparently prepped for being parked before her husband passed. Glad to be back on the forum!!

    can't bore em that big without ending up with a stack of washers, but it was and is still common to fit a big-bore kit to the original cases. i have one that works well.

    i suggest you not be too impressed by the tools, unless what she's talking about includes a lathe and a milling machine. your machine will use british standard fasteners on the the early 60's parts, and ordinary american SAE on the rest.

    the numbers might be an issue if someone at the motor vehicle department decides the bike has been built from stolen parts, and both the frame and the engine case have been clearly re-numbered. different jurisdictions in america take different views on what is and what is not acceptable about re-stamped VINs.

    Well...I got ZERO replies after my "Triumphant" return to the forum. Hopefully better luck with this post. I bought the bike and came back with probably 10 boxes of parts, manuals, vintage Snap-on BS tools and some amazing test equipment. For an awesome price. I couldn't be happier. Here's some pics...
