Being new to Bonnies, upon extensive reading up on the mods to do, i started tackling the easier ones first. Mine is a 2006 with 220 miles on it and was sitting in a garage unused for years. So had to clean out all the gunk from the carbs.. and as I just rebuilt/cleaned the carbs (purrs and rides so good now). While carbs were out, tank n seat were out, I saw the AI setup exposed right there and went about removing it based on the articles below. https://triumphbonneville.org/wp-content/uploads/air-injection-removal-instructions.pdf https://www.triumphrat.net/threads/beware-of-air-injection-removal-kit.88223/ https://www.thetriumphforum.com/threads/secondary-air-injection-removal.9778/ http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/pdf/air_inject_removal.pdf Instead of removing all the plumbing and recapping the cylinder ports next to the spark plugs (which I saw several reports of the plugs coming out/getting loose/causing unfiltered air to be sucked into the cylinders..etc..) I went down a different route of not removing the plumbing but just flipping the reed valves to remain closed all the time. Once I opened up the 2 reed values on either side, these are usually always closed and prevent the exhaust gases from going up the tubes/causing blue-ing of the pipes. So to prevent them from ever opening and to avoid removing all the plumbing, I flipped the valve so it's always closed, no matter what the engine/exhaust cycle is. I also removed the vent pipe coming from the valve into the cylinder head and used the same pipe to cap off both the vent pipes on both cylinders. I felt the bike ran a lot smoother and of course, no more pops during decel or when throttle is eased. Some pics of what I did ..just re-oriented the reed valve flaps so they r always closed. This allows, imho, to keep the rest of the plumbing as is, stock and if u need AI, flip the valves back again and connect the hose back to the valve and cylinder heads. I have noticed much smoother idling, acceleration, zero POP's during deceleration after I have done this and rode around 50 miles with this. I think this is working but if any experts or long term bonnie tweakers have any comments/advice, pls do let me know..
I removed all the AI system and plugged the cylinder had no problems at all. Runs fine plus down pipes less colourful!
Funny, isn't it? Beautiful colouration of the pipes and popping on the overrun are two of the things I love
I like the rainbow colors on the pipes too..this was just an exercise in how to do it the simplest way possible to lock those colors in and avoid removing the plumbing..i can flip back n forth now easily..Different brush strokes .multiple ways to skin a cat n all that...
I did the same and pleased I did, another brilliant small job I carried out that made a world of difference was to replace the 18T front sprocket with a 19T. Massive cruising difference, much more relaxing.
I removed all of it on my 03 790. Much better access to the plugs and cleaned up all areas around the frame etc.
