As some of you already know, I have a 1982 CX500 I rescued from Ebay and effectively rebuilt. (It's in other threads on the forum somewhere). The stator was replaced but then the water leak started (didn't leak before), so I've started the job of water seal replacement. I made a frame, clamped it to to a dolly so it met the underside of the engine and then removed the mounting bolts. Slid the engine off the drive shaft and then raised the bike leaving the engine free. Rear cover off - there's the new stator and the hole for the mechanical seal is the middle one at the bottom of the picture. This is what the engine has to come out for, inner oil seal and mechanical seal. Turns out that the aperture for some covers is 27.8mm whilst some are 28.3mm. You can only get seals which are 28.3mm. Guess which size mine is? Hello flap wheel and Aldi special buy micrometer! A bit of nervous "dremelling"followed. All back together for now. No way to know if it's worked until you put it all back together!
I've just done a new seal in my spare engine. Same aperture size, it's a 1980 engine. I just hogged it out with a kitchen knife and dropped the seal in with some clear silicon.

Sounds like your meds have worn off Small Hausen Anyway my bestist mate @crispey is not the type of guy who would take advantage of a poor pensioner especially one who guided him to buy a posh pair of riding pants at last years NEC Bike Show
SEAL??? Isn‘t that either an animal or a highly trained but underpayed American hitman? Didn‘t know, you find them in motorcycles....
That was the idea - originally wanted a BMW R80 as a project bike but way too expensive. CX 500's are much cheaper!
You have ideas in mind? It is a cracking engine shape to play with. My Moto Guzzi V7 is still undergoing more transformation, but this was it at last camera moment: (Sorry about the HD image, have had a wedge of folk use my photos on Instagram without asking)
Yes, I love the engine shape. The Guzzi is more elegant, whilst the CX is more brutish in appearance. I picked these bikes as inspiration, although I chose not to remove the battery and air box.
Have you tried to source the 27mm seal from non motorcycle sites, Steve? What are the Internal and external and width sizes? We could have a treasure hunt, before you put it back in the bike? Winner gets cake? https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/All-Oil-Seals/c4747_5571/index.html
