I had a phonecall from the non triumph dealers I bought my second hand bonnie from, they have failed to fix it again (it is under warranty from them) so they have sent it to a local Triumph specialist.

Hopefully this is good news and he will sort it and I will get it back all working.

they have been trying (they must have spent a fortune in man hours in the workshop, if that makes sense), but after rebuilding the carbs with new parts and trying a new crank sensor and coils it still conks out....hopefully the triumph specialist will do better than the non triumph dealers did

 

He is building a comfier pillion seat for his Mrs.

I find the angle grinder ‘not guilty’.

 

Which, by a process of elimination and assuming no shorts in the wiring, means it is the igniter/ECU. I hope they don’t expect you to pay for their experimentation!

 

in theory they are liable for parts and labour excluding consumables and for every day it is off the road they have agreed to extend the warranty

 

You always like to imagine them beavering away, scratching heads and testing stuff but in practice I suspect it is parked up in frustration ‘until they get round to it’ when it proves not to be a quick fix.

If they are not particularly familiar with Bonnie foibles they could easily chase their tails - and the ECU can really only be tested by substitution and no dealer would happily have another one in stock. TTP Firestarter are cheaper than the OEM item although it is clearly a Gill unit but with a crisper tune.

You should be able to fill in the whole area once you’ve got it to the right shape.

 

Have used that stuff myself and it does what Freck says I have seen it drilled ,machined, and used for years with no detrimental effect

 

Wow 9mm allen key, last time I used one of those was around 1992 on a 16v VW that had bust its cambelt

 

Well might not be today ! But I will be doing the following Work on my America . The ignition timing pick up coil needs replacing (130,000 klms) so did ok there ! I have the parts ! And one of my air horns/tubes between air box and the throttle bodies is perished ! So two ways to tackle these , do two together , air tube is ordered. Pull air box out and have more access to wiring harness for pick up , do air tube at same time , but don't know when that part will arrive ! Or do pick up then ride until tube arrives . Been finding wear and tear age related problems as I pull down parts the last few weeks.
I'm thinking fix , repair and ride it's only time I'm losing in doubling up the work and time lost for riding ! Retirement give plenty for both

 

Hi capt how do you know the ignition timing pick up coil needs replacing ?

 

Went for a ride with SWMBO last weekend , ran fine all the way out to the Ettamoga pub in Cunderdin. On the return trip temperature in the mid 30's and just over half way home , the engine started to stutter , cutting in and out ! Changing speed or gears made no difference. When almost home and slowing right down, it stopped working.
Thursday I borrowed a multi Meter , did checks , alternator windings ok , infinite resistance on all three windings - engine off , steady 50v AC on all three running, tested ignition coil pick up cold ok 500 odd ohms , hot almost full resistance , 1200 odd ohms on 2000 scale .
New unit acquired yesterday.
The old insitu about to come out , picks taken about an hour ago. Break then back to it ! Granddaughters visiting this week , but they are out today until about 14:00 hrs , so just under 3 hrs to try finish it up

 

Here's how I'm keeping the innards of the motor clear of old gasket scrapings.


Plastic oil bottle cut one side out , oil or grease surface and push into the housing , plastic blocks scrapings falling into the workings and oily surface is sticky so fine particles adhere . Working outdoors on this.

 

Bonneville out for the first time since mid December due to the utterly crap weather we've had and are still getting!

Still got it dirty though!

 

And then you get to clean it, deep joy
