Looks good. What did it involve as far as parts? Did you have to get different bar clamp/ risers? How were the brake lines and wiring? Looking to do the same at some point. My back ain’t what it used to be.
Hi, I just left it with the Triumph store, then collected it when ready. Parts that came back with bike were: Handlebars, Risers/Clamps, brake cable and clutch cable. The clutch cable cost me extra on the price quoted for the work. The called me to say the thought they might get away using the original cable, but, apparently it was just a tad too short for comfort. As you can probably see in the pictures, the bar end fittings don’t ‘Fit’ properly. I could try getting some Scrambler bar ends, or, as these new bars are longer than the originals I might just shorten them. Regards,Ken.
Kenbro Looks good mate. Another black steed. Will give the inmates something to ogle tonight. Yes the bar ends are standing out a bit. But you can get ones are just like a cap to go there. Also ar you sure you fitted the ends right by tapping them home with a rubber mallet before tightening up. Regards & Ride Safe Joe.
Hi Joe, The handlebar end has an insert fitted (Held in by a spring pin/roll pin, I think) which is threaded to suit the screw holding the end cap on. Will do some googling before altering anything, perhaps get Scrambler end pieces would be best. Thanks, Joe. Ken.
Looks good with those bars. Been thinking about fitting fat-bars but it hadn't clicked that I could use the Scrambler bars. You say they're longer but is there much difference in the 'pull back' (or whatever it's called)? It would be helpful if you could tell us what you paid. I know Triumph labour costs are pretty high, so if the parts aren't extortionate I could order them and do it myself. Now you need to swap those ridiculous mirrors for bar-ends PS. Youles is also my local dealer, got tired trekking over to Bill Smith's in Chester.
Hi, I can live with the mirrors . It’s a bit hard to measure the difference between the bars now they’re fitted, but, I agree with others that have had the same done, yes there is more ‘Pull back’ as standard (and it can be increased a little more by pulling the bars towards you more) and the bars give a more upright riding position. Joe, I’m wondering now if the Scrambler has a longer throttle tube that would come nearer the bar end. The fitting for the end cap is just the same in both pairs of handlebars with nothing to actually push inside.just the small screw to keep the end in place. Cheers,Ken.
Hi Ken, I’m interested in your thread as I’m thinking of doing the same to my 07 Bonnie. Just to recap,all you needed to change was the brake hose and clutch cable,without the need to change the throttle or electrics,(which would probably deter me). Tom.
Hiya Tom, Not sure about the Bonnie,but on my bike the risers and clamps needed changing as scrambler bars larger dia. than Street Twin ones. Throttle (Mine fly by wire) and electrics unchanged. Someone (USA I think) had to remove the swing arm to change the brake line...others have said, leave the swing arm in place and just reroute the brake line down the opposite side of the frame. The brake line has some rigid parts in it that can easily be damaged( kinked) when trying the reroute method. I think these complications fitting the brake line only apply to NONE ABS bikes. On ABS ones the brake line goes to the ABS thingy which I believe is under the seat, much simpler. Mine is ABS. Triumph use three different handlebar diameters on the "classics". e.g. Street Twin - 7/8 inches (c. 22mm) Street Scrambler - tapered or fat bars that are 1 1/8 inches (c. 28.6mm) in the centre, and 7/8 inches at the ends Bonneville - 1 inch (25.4 mm) Street Twin and Street Scrambler handlebar mounts/clamps are interchangeable (I've bought some used ST clamps in case I want to change the 'bars on my SS... there's much more choice in 7/8 diameter handlebars). I understand that there's a problem if you need a different brake hose, because the master cylinder is connected to the ABS unit via a flexible hose that is swaged on to a rigid pipe. Pity they didn't use a junction block at the front of the bike - something to look at when it's out of warranty, perhaps.
