anyone have pics or vids on how to fix the clutch safety switch or neutral switch? my 2010 bonneville is not always starting up for me and I think it has something to do with those switches (since it starts after I play with the clutch a few times)
Welcome Shauna, you’re probably better off buying a new one for what they cost. It’s probably just a micro switch under the left switch cluster that’ll have a screw holding it on. Hopefully it won’t be like the newer ones that are built into the cluster. If you want to fettle it though, I’d remove it and spray in some contact cleaner where you can, then leave it to dry before putting it back.
Hi Shauna, that is unfortunately a recurring issue with some of the older Bonnies, I experience that from time to time with my 2011 T100. I pulled out the clutch sensor from the left-hand assembly, cleaned it, and plug it back in. It didn't exactly fix it, but made it less fiddly. Another thing you might want to check is the side-stand sensor, it might get stuck with gunk. Give it a good clean, and just a bit of grease.
I really would just try to clean the clutch sensor first. It's super easy. It's the round plug that connects to the left-hand assembly. Underneath it, there's a squarish hole, use a blunt screwdriver and gently push in, it'll lift the tab that keeps it in place. Once out, check that the spring works properly - it should be super smooth, otherwise when you're pulling the clutch, it is kind of pushing the whole plug towards the outside, rather than just depressing the little metallic bit inwards. You might even try to start the bike with the plug out, while pressing it (you'll need three hands to do that). If that's not it, at least you'll have one less thing to worry! But from your previous description, it sounds exactly like this issue.
OLD thread... But first I would determine which is the problem. I keep a couple of jumper wires with alligator clips in with my electrical tools. I would jumper each switch out one at a time to be sure where the problem lies. Saves a lot of time in the long run. ...J.D.
Well I must thank all of you most sincerely for thinking of my problem and repliying. Before I whent out today, ( first one this this year) I lubricated the switches as you all suggested. Did 20 miles, stalled her a couple off times, stopped the engine for about 20 mins. No probs at all. I hope that things had dried out and that was the the problem. What a great lot of peaple. Thank you.
I’ve had issue with this. Dealer wanted to charge be £400 for a new lh switch gear… I’ve seen a YouTube video where you cut the button that gets pushed in, I’ll try this and report back.
