Most of my seats I talk to R K Leighton. They have never failed to impress me with their seat renovations. And they are not all that expensive.

I put the mid mounts on mine too. I thoroughly recommend it ! Scraping pegs is not an issue now for me. The odd scrape in sharp first or second gear corners using a lot of throttle is all. I put the comfort seat and comfort pillion seat and back rest on it as well. My fiancé is quite happy with that for our day trips.

So this is an attempt at showing how much more lean angle from the mid mounted controls.

If you look closely at the photo it shows the 2018 Speedmaster with both a forward control AND a mid mount control in place.

I re mounted the forward one to see the comparison.

I drew a line on the ground connecting the outer edge of the front and rear tyres. Then positioned camera as close to ground as possible at front tyre. And then positioned a metal rod from the line on the ground to the front mount peg at 90 degrees. Then gradually raised the rod until it connected with the feeler on the front peg. And kept lifting until the line of sight on the camera matches on the front and mid mount peg feelers.

Yeah I know it’s a bit crude - but it shows roughly how bent the front mounted peg would be before the mid mounted peg starts to scrape.

In short - a lot more clearance with the mid mounts.

    Very interesting :)
I’ve still not touched my forward mounted foot rests down yet though
Maybe I can’t ride and should just get another car :p

Good evening, after reading the posts I just have to change the platforms or go back to the beach bar. The current configuration on long journeys is too inconvenient. :pensive: I solved the peg problem by simply removing it. Too many round and curved in my part. :) While for the pillon, after taking even the comfort pillon that changes little, I put it in the hands of a local craftsman who definitively solved the problem for me. Even my wife refused to climb after the first 200km. Now she is very happy to have no more problems

    Hi Wessa,

    It’s a good question you’ve asked!

Here is how I came to choose a Speedmaster 1200 with mid controls over the T 120. I did seriously consider the T120.

I read the reviews on the Speedmaster and the most common complaint was lack of cornering clearance - I don’t like peg scraping so I was a bit disappointed with the Speedmaster release initially.

Then I read somewhere that the Speedmaster is in fact a Bobber Black with forward mounted controls and two up suspension. The reviews on the Bobber Black don’t whinge about cornering clearance so I thought “I wonder if it’s the forward mounted controls?”. By that stage I had discovered you could get the mid controls on the Speedmaster as an option.

So I figured that if I test rode a Bobber Black I would get a pretty good idea of what a Speedmaster with mid controls would be like.

So I did that. And I found that while it didn’t have the massive clearance of the Thruxton 1200S I was riding at the time, it had enough to keep me happy.

So the Speedmaster became a genuine contender v the T120 at that point .

I also discovered something else. I found that the Bobber Black (and obviously the Speedmaster) has this ridiculous level of low down grunt when you crank it on and an exhaust note to die for.

I did some research on this torque issue and I gather it is due to the Bobber Black / Speedmaster having a dual air box set up. Basically engine breathing.

Whereas I understand the T120 has a single air box setup. So the Speedmaster and the T120 have a different torque curve.

I was also looking for passenger comfort and the Speedmaster has nearly 6cm longer wheelbase than the T120. We are comfortable on the Speedmaster with two of us on board in terms of space but I wouldn’t want there to be any less.

I was also looking for ease of passenger mount and dismount and the Speedmaster has a lower seat height than the T120.

After that it came down to styling differences between the T120 and the Speedmaster and my own preferences. I liked the side cut exhausts on the Speedmaster more than the pea shooters on the T120.

As you say - to each their own!

PS I am tipping Triumph will release the Speedmaster Black with mid controls sooner or later !

PPS. I also found that those forward controls on the Speedmaster were actually pretty heavy when the dealer removed them and handed them to me in a box. There has to be 5-6kg weight reduction going to the mid controls.

Hi and thanks for the comprehensive update. It looks like you put a lot of thought into your choice on the speedmaster. Enjoy.....

Where did you get the mid control kit from? I'm currently planning on picking up one of these but would love to know how much I'm gonna be spending on the mid controls and where to get the kit from. Thanks in advance!

Triumph will sell you the mid mount kit :)
    Not cheap though :(
Or find someone with a Bobber who wants to do a swap :)
