I hit 500 miles on my Speed Triple RS today and then wheeled her into the garage and it clicked over to 501 miles Apparently I've been babying her. I thought I needed to limit her to 5000 rpm or lower until 500 miles, but it's 6000 rpm after 300 miles. Break in is going fine, consistent variation on the throttle, some engine braking, etc. I'll just extend the 6000rpm limit an extra 150 miles or so, and then move on to the next step. What an awesome motorcycle!
Just rolled over the 500 mile mark on my Speed Twin last night myself. Happy moment. When I read your post I read it as ”wheelied into the garage.” Lol, thought well that’s a hell of a way to celebrate!
Owners manual doesn’t give a specific RPM range, but the sticker on the tank (if I remember correctly) was to keep it below 4K until 300 miles, and under 5k until 500 miles. And then the obvious “don’t keep steady RPM’s for extended periods of time,” and “do not use full throttle,” etc.
Cool! Picked up mine 3 days ago and I'm at 186 miles, stuck in the 5000 rev range for many more miles! May I ask... How is your gearbox? Going from Neutral to 1st gear is of course a little clunky but how about to 2nd and 3rd? Mine clunks the same from Neutral to 1st as 1st to second.. sometimes 3rd and 4th as well.. It feels wrong and not smooth at all!
Mine is buttery smooth at ~2k miles. It was definitely clunkier at the beginning for the first 1k miles. Hence, it could be part of the running in process. I never felt like mine seemed too clunky. However, I have read of other owners beliveing these gearboxes are clunky. It can't hurt to have it looked at by your dealer or a triumph specialist. Out of interest, Is it clunky when under load? Or only at low RPM/Speeds?
Thanks for the reply. Since I'm in the running in process I have only tried max @ 5.000 RPM and it does not seem to matter if it's 2.000 or 5.000 rpm. It sounds and feels just like going from Neutral to 1st.. It feels wrong and takes a lot of the joy away. I have been able to make smooth shifts from 1st to 2nd ~5-6 times, at around 3.000 rpm and shifting REALLY slow, letting it go through neutral to second from 1st. Using the quickshifter makes it smooth-ish but feels wrong at those low RPM's
Hmmm. Ok well the quickshifter should actually feel more clunky at low RPM then clutched shifts. I am wondering if the clutch is set up correctly. Perhaps it isn't disengaging fully when you have it pulled in. An easy way to check would be to get up on a rear stand and see if the wheel still rotates when you have it pulled in. Otherwise try adjusting the clutch lever to have a really short bite point. This was in fact an issue with a Street triple RS I tried, where the dealer had set it up incorrectly. If that fails, I would definitely have it looked at.
Many thanks for the (quick) replies! I will adjust the clutch lever (It feels too far away anyways) My single swing rear stand will arrive within a few days.
Seems normal to me to have low gears less smooth than high gears. I don't believe I've ever seen a motorcycle where you can't produce a "clunk' dropping into 1st from neutral with some power in the motor.
From neutral to first clunk 100% understandable. But I mention that the gear change from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd feels just the same as Neutral to 1st. A slight click would be ok.. but a harsh clunk is disgusting
I think I can produce a 1st to 2nd clunk if I'm not paying attention, but I don't have any concerns for my gear box. I hope you get your issues ironed out fast. The good weather is now, while it's cool.
Perhaps youre a little unused to the catch point? The throttle response can be a lil enthusiastic and they tend to have a late catch point
