Okay, so I’m a bike buying idiot (74 in the last 10 years) and I currently have a 2018 Ducati Hypermotard 939SP with full Termi etc.

My last bike was a KTM Superduke 1290 SE, heavily modified with 175hp at the rear wheel and cost me £19k to build.

But, I love the Speed Triple and I’ve not had one before, and want another naked bike. I’ve had 2 Street Triple Rs but felt they were a little underpowered.

I want to spend around £6k which gets me a 2012 R with low boy etc. My only reservation is will it underwhelm me power wise ?

I know the simple answer is test drive one, but history tells me I just buy them and sell it if I don’t like it !

So before so I pull the plug feedback would be welcome

Like your choices of Ducati and KTM, if it's of any help, I have a 2015 Speed and love it, not the R but after changing the twin Arrows for a lowboy Scorpion Serket it felt a bit notchy so last week I got it remapped, went on the dyno too and now making just under 140 and smoothed her out through the rev range with a bit more grunt in the mid, there was a Speedy R in the bikes for sale section but can't remember how much.

Thanks Dave, I really want one, and will end up remapping / exhaust / airbox mods blah blah blah. The Superduke has ruined bikes for me, absolutely earth shattering performance, a bit too mad really !

I had a 2012 Tuono V4 APRC, stunning bikes, best soundtrack ever, not as good as the KTM though, best bike I’ve ever had

Superdukes have earned the nickname "the beast" I think haven't they, cracking looking bikes, as you say, must be hard after having that much power on tap to drop back to less, I'm sure you'd find a Speedy a lot of fun though, good luck if you decide to go for one and keep us updated on mods etc.

Will do Dave, the KTM was intoxicating, but I ride the Lancashire and Yorkshire Dales so a bit too much to be honest. The Hyper is a weapon on those roads though.

There’s a Speedy R in Pure Triumph in Wellingborough, I think I will buy that one if it’s still there

You’re right, it’s the best bike ever. I’m hoping the riding experience, character and handling of a Speedy R will be almost as enjoyable

Welcome to the forum! You were very hard to 'convince.' The telepathic powers of the forum members are formidable. You might look at this thread, or this one, or this one  Just check the search tool for 'speed' and 'sale.' I think there are others.

Spent all that money on the SD and sold it with only 2,000 miles on it!
I test rode a new one last week, unfortunately with only 50miles on it so couldn’t get the full experience, so may get another ride after it’s run in or try another dealer with a bike with more miles on it.
I would say get a demo ride on a Speedy b4 pulling the trigger on one.

The difference between a stock one and my old on is a galaxy apart

Stock is 150-152 rwhp and 92ft lb of torque. Power was stepped and really strong at the top.

Mine with full titanium Akrapovic, motohooligan airbox, PCV and custom rolling road set up was.

175rwhp (the 173 in the ad is at misprint) and 108ft lb of torque.

But that does not tell the whole story, it gained 20hp in midrange and the torque curve was perfect.

On addition to all the power and torque it lost about 18kg in weight with the full system, airbox removal, pegs, carbon etc.

    I want it back!

lol, I’ve had 4 bikes in 12 years, and the first 2 were the same model.
If you can afford it, then go for it, I’m just a tight arse and have only lost about £1,000 in those 12 years.
There must be a Triumph dealer near you that you could demo a Speedy from?
I’ve a 2012 R with PVM wheels and a low boy 3into1 (just under 7 kilos lighter alone) and I think with the Ohlins and carbon parts it’s a great value bike.

My toes curl when I think how much money I've spunked away

I'll check dealers when I get home.

What do the speedys handle like ? Is the ohlins a bit harsh on our shitty roads?

I’m only 12st 5lbs and it’s a bit too firm for me, will be having shock serviced and a set up done for my weight including spring changes where needed.
I have taken all the preload off the shock and it’s still too hard, so sure I need softer spring.
Think front springs maybe ok, but I’ve had to keep some extra preload in to balance the front and rear ends.
You get the Brembo monoblock calipers on the R too.

Hi Wazzaduke, our history of ownership sounds the same lol ! In my circles the SD, Tuono and S1000R is the naked's when it comes to power. Funny enough every weekend when I'm out people walk right past them and stop to stare at the ST, they sure are pretty and though not as much power can still be a lot of fun in the right hands ! It has a good torque curve, sounds awesome and they are by no means slow either, like I said just not as much crazy as the SD. I love mine, my mates with their Tuono's and Ktm 's calls me "Clean Triumph" because it always shines !
