Just fitted a Tec Bike Parts Monza Cap. Once the cap and adaptor screwed in I had to back off the cap by nearly 3/4 of a turn in order to align the cap. This feels like an awful lot a I would have thought compromise the adaptor/tank interface seal. Has anyone else fitted one and if so did they encounter anything similar. Geoff.
Is there a seperate threaded collar that goes inside the tank neck the cap screws on to that?? if so you have to line position of the inner threaded collar and the cap right take a look at the 3rd post from the top here if so beware the fine thread...its a finger stripper
Sounds like the usual crap standards for TeC stuff I'd send it back for a refund, don't want leaking fuel on any bike!
My experience of Tec parts is not good either so I tend to agree. Phone them first though and see if they have an answer to your problem.
Just had a good second look at it and as I suspected the adaptor/tank seal is badly compromised. I have removed it and will speak with them tomorrow, I do suspect however that I will be making a trip to the post office. Geoff.
looking at the tec website it looks like a 2 part one like mine, the cap screws off the bit that screws into the tank, so you should be able to get it to line up
Unfortunately, it appears not to be so. the amount that I have had to back it of to achieve the correct orientation has resulted in about 1/8th of an inch separation of the sealing faces. I will reserve judgement in case I have done something stupid (not for the first time) but if this is indeed the case then itis not at all acceptable. Geoff.
Ok so you’ve got 2 parts the cap and the threaded adapter that goes into the tank? Did you get a couple of large cork Washers? These are spacers of different thickness. That go between the cap and the tank I used only one of them to line it up right. Mine were taped to the outside of the box. If you didn’t get any you could make your own and experiment. Or try screwing it in a 1/4 of a turn further back
Got a very prompt reply from George Milburn of Tec Bike Parts. I am as I feared being a tad stupid. The cap is designed to be orientated as per the Thruxton fitment with the hinge to the rear of the tank. I checked this on the Triumph Web site and this is indeed the case. In this orientation, the fit is quite acceptable. Thanks for all the input. Geoff.
Pleased to hear you got sorted my experience with TEC has been good but there are a few who dont share the majorities opinion...still its a free country (ish)
Certainly sounds a lot better than my experience! "Like it or lump it" comes to mind! As you say, everyone has an opinion!
Don't let it bother you too much, we've all been there and done that. I will even venture to say that I will be there again soon. It's just being human! Glad you have that sorted.
I started with a TEC Monza cap (which has a grub screw locking thingamyjig) but still couldn’t get it to line up how l wanted and give a secure seal, so it went in the ‘not sure what to do with’ drawer. I then went for a Motone straightforward screw on billet cap (in black). Looks great. Btw l’ve had several TEC parts and have generally been impressed with the quality, considering their price. You get what you pay and all that jazz.
