2009 Triumph Speed Triple 1050 Starting Problem

Hi,
I am new to the site but hoping someone can give me some clues? My 2009 Triumph Speed Triple 1050 refuses to start. When I press the starter all I get is a faint clicking noise from the relay under the seat? I have replaced the solenoid but no change? I can start it when I short the terminals on the solenoid but that's obviously not ideal - could anyone suggest where I should look for the answer, please?

dont know your bike - but I would check wiring from starter button to relay and from relay to solenoid.(perhaps partly broken wire or bad connection,
as you say solenoid changed and tested ok.
ps
You can still get a connection through a partly broken or rusted wire or bad connection but as soon as it takes a load upon it - it fails.

I had a similar issue on my 2010 Sprint, just a faint click from the starter relay. It was the relay that was faulty. In the two years I had it, it was replaced twice under warranty. When it won't start try tapping it gently as you hold in the start button, that worked for me until it was replaced. You can open up the relay by prizing off the cover. The contacts can the be cleaned with 1200 wet and dry and contact cleaner.

Thanks Victor, I tried all of the relays and no joy - dropped it at Bike Tec in Tamworth now

 

Just some feedback as you were kind enough to offer some pointers, Bike-Tec at Tamworth found the problem was a broken wire and a couple that looked close to going, where the wiring goes around the headstock. I had read on another site somewhere that this is a common fault on triumphs? All sorted now, thanks again everyone

Re: 1050 triple starting trouble.
I just returned from Assen on speed-triple 1050R and upon arrival at Le Shuttle the bike failed to churn/start properly after check-in. Checked battery terminals were well connected, and took a jump start from staff on site to get going, but the bike wouldn't self start. After 30 minutes cool-down however everything back to normal. This is the THIRD triple 1050 I have known to have this sort of starter trouble, two of mine and one my brother's. (the others were both STSprints). It seems long runs and hot engines deter the starter's willingness. Any other similar experiences out there? we guessed that possibly the starter demands too much charge from the battery when very hot ? should I replace battery and starter motor to avoid potential future problems ? Or just wait for cool-down and accept the problem ?

 

Hi if I was you I would start a thread, youll get more views and possible answers this thread is almost done and so some wont check back in.
If you can , take battery voltages when running and when off also did it prime the fuel pump, make any noise atall the more detail the more these guys can help.

Hi all, another update on starting problems with my 2009 Soeed Triple - 18 months after the repair to the wiring around the headstock I had the same symptoms. After head scratching I was put in touch with an expert on triumphs and he located a problem with the ignition loom connector under the tank and air box. There was a burnt out connector in the block, which has now been bypassed and all is well again !! I would upload pics but not sure how to do it !!
