You put a 1.6mm in, pull a 2mm out....In, out, in, out....

    Anyone here done the clutch plate Hokey Cokey on a 1050 and swapped a 2mm for a 1.6mm to try and help with clutch drag ?

    Help as in get rid of :D

    I'm on the look out for a 1.6mm plate for my 2011 Speedy to give it a go....

    Have you tried just removing the clutch basket and cleaning all the plates and basket out as it's a common problem that is normally cured along with fresh oil n filter :D

    It was serviced last weekend so possibly just the plates sticking a bit you think ?

    I'll try and get some gaskets and open her up and have a look see....

    At least it uses paper type gaskets....My CBR600RR used the liquid gasket and it got everywhere....right mess...

    Then my Kawasaki ZX6R you could take the covers off 20 times and the gasket still worked OK :D

    Yes a common problem, also whilst apart clean any rough edges on the plates and basket.

    Would you recommend soaking them in oil before putting them back ?

    if using the old ones just a wipe over with plenty of oil is fine :D

    Gave then a clean today....

    When I pulled the first plate out the rest pulled out with it ha ha..

    Nearly all were stuck to the next

    Not tried it yet but will give it a go tomorrow

    Found the problem then lol, bash em apart and a give them all a good clean and good as new

    This sounds like something I need to do.
    I get some god awful clonking when changing from 1st to 2nd.
    About 3,000 miles (10 weeks) to the next oil change so will do it then
    Will order the gaskets now.

    Any particular good advice, process to follow. Or any improvements/upgrades that can be made ?

    Advice! Bring your oil change forward.
    Clunking is not a good sound in a moving engine, I would sort it ASAP

    you said it was serviced last weekend. was it done by a Triumph garage using the correct oil?? Some oils are more prone to this problem, I believe silkolene or motul semi or fully synth are the best but if you change you need to fully clean the plates and remove all the old oil first. Was the bike better before the service,if so there is your problem?

    Not sure which oil brand has been put in....

    But after cleaning the plates the clutch/gearchange is like butter....

    Long may it continue :D

    Okay, gaskets ordered from World of Triumph and EBC clutch kit and heavy springs from Squaredeals
    Over £100 but something that needs doing...
    Doesn't neeed any special tools does it?

    The YouTube videos don't show anything being used that seems out of the ordinary...

    Warm engine up, completely drain oil.
    Remove starter cover, engine cover then clutch cover.
    Undo bolts, remove plates.
    Clean basket
    Put in new plates (having been suitably soaked in oil)
    Clean covers,
    New gaskets
    Torque up
    New oil

    Anything I have missed?

    Errr nothing missing there mate.....

    I'd personally let the engine cool down after draining the oil as I've had bad experiences stripping threads with removing and fitting bolts to a hot engine

    The only thing to watch is that the starter and other engine cover bolts are all the same size...

    But the clutch cover bolts are slightly longer....easy to spot as they have an unthreaded portion under the head of the bolt

    The covers can be a bastard to come off

    I have a small pry bar and gently worked it round on the covers 'tabs' that help in removal

    Noted about the different length bolts and the need for some gentle persuasion to remove the covers, I too have some suitable bars to use with some cloth for protection and a rubber mallet to assist.

    This is the sort of job I love doing myself, through a stealership it would cost over £200 for genuine triumph clutch plates plus two hours labour = £400+.
    This way I do it myself and know that the plates are oiled up and it is done properly, and so much cheaper!:)

    I will try and get my lad (12y/o) to help, he hasn't shown much interest in motorbikes and needs maning up a bit, too interested in computer games:rolleyes:

    Not trying to be patronising but you did order the right gaskets didn't you ?

    I noticed when I ordered mine there was a change by engine number within a certain range of VIN numbers

    Yup, mine is the pre-change where the headlights went from round to the oval bug type
