Bugger can't work the Internet today! Ok try again. Can I tell from the VIN where my bike was made? I read this elsewhere: "The quick check is the 11th character of your vin "J" = Jacknell road Hinckley England or "T" = Chonburi Thailand."
That's correct but I thought only the Classics were made in Taiwan, certainly in 2005. In any case Ollie I think your Tiger is a 2005 so it's almost certainly been made in Britain.
Well that's good. No disrespect to Taiwan but I live just down the road from Hinckley so it's nice to think I'm on something local. Cheers
My 2014 Tiger 800 XC was made Thailand which was a little disappointing as I live just 20 mins from the Hinckley factory.
I don't want to hijack this thread, but on my 2003 Bonnie the 11th digit is a 3, so I delved into some old threads on other forums and come up with 'if it starts with SMTTJ it was made in Hinckley', any one on here agree with this for older bikes? Mine does. Bearing in mind mine was made a year after the devastating fire I'm not sure if the Taiwan factory was set up when mine was 'born', so could be a Brit bike still made in what was left of the factory. Cant smell any soot or smoke though!
Just done a bit more research, it appears that the 5th letter is the determinator, i.e SMTT J Hinckley) T Taiwan. (I like that new word I just invented) Digits 9 & 10 denote the model. Seems to work for the Bonnie, might work for other models too.
Hmmm, well the VIN on the TS has a fifth letter as P and the 11th as H. So I'm none the wiser as to where it was put together....
Just had a quick google and it would seem that you can't actually tell the country of assembly from a digit in the VIN number. The only way would be to ring up Triumph and ask them to look it up.
Gone through the web, all the different forums for a link, nope, cant find anything to explain the 'P'.
