A new Triumph Daytona 660 is arriving very soon, it is available in 3 colours and all the usual extra factory options, it appears to have higher clip on bars, so should be more comfortable to ride on long distances, whilst it's power is sub 100 it is not that far off, so should be great fun on the twisties. To me it shouldn't be called a Daytona, it's just a Trident in different clothes (much like the 660 Tiger)
The Daytona name has a long and varied rich history, from early 500s to 1200s, the more modern Daytona variants saw the TT600 go to a Daytona 600 then a 650, then 9555i, 675, and 765 called the Moto2, they all offer a different experience, the same is true for the Trident, the Street Triple has evolved the same way as many other named models have. Personally I like the look of the new machine, it is aimed at both experienced and new riders looking at getting into biking with a sportier looking bike, as it can have the restrictor kit fitted easily.
Kind of the Triumph version of the Aprilia RS660. Similar ergos etc. I'm sure there will be a cycle magazine comparison between the two.
Looks good, and I’m sure it’ll sell well. Interesting how Triumph has focussed on the lower displacement market over the past year or two.
The new Daytona has a lot of new engine updates from the 660 Trident, for example it produces just shy of 94bhp, up 17%, and has a redline of 11250rpm, new crank and cams, new head, pistons, valve gear and electronics, a lower seat height, and rubber comes by way of Michelin Power 6. It has part LCD and TFT dash, the real interesting bit is there is a race kit in development with Peter Hickman, Peter runs his own workshop for the 765 models and builds and races his own 765 on the roads, he does some pretty trick kit, although the new venture with Triumph will be aimed at the new National Sportsbike Championship series alongside BSB. So it is interesting times ahead, but for real world riding on our UK roads the power would suit most people. I am looking forward to a test ride on one in late March. I assume that it's a 660 for the Australia/New Zealand learner laws. I assume that it's 95 PS/70 kilowatts/93.7 bhp so that there can be an A2 licence version. I assume that this is a "toe in the water" with a version that should have the widest appeal. I assume it will be easy to produce a full-fat 765 with upgraded suspension IF there's the demand.
It is aimed at both the experienced and those looking at their first sports bike, it already has a restrictor kit available, there has already been a Daytona 765 Moto 2 and as I understand it there is no intention of resurrecting that model, and there is also the new 765 Street Triple Moto 2, therefore people have plenty of options if they seek more performance, not to mention stepping up to say the 1200RR or 1200RS Speed Triple. The new Daytona 660 is just that a new model as people are moving away from high BHP machines, hence why Kawasaki and Honda have gone back to 600s. There is after all only so much usable power on public road that a person can use. Take Dean Harrison for example, he rides a BMW GS for road riding, and I doubt many would be able to keep up with him. A lot of customer feedback on what riders are wanting from a machine and R&D went into the new 660 Daytona. Time will tell if it sells well or not.
